Don Rudi Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 Hi, I am looking for some recommendations for good books on the MiG-21. Not the standard walk around booklets, more something with "MiG-21 in action" photos and color plates and maybe some recollections of real pilots? Modules/maps: all, except for the Dora My missions: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/filter/user-is-Don rudi/apply/ Primary system: i7-13700k, RTX 4080, 32 GB, Win 11, Virpil WarBRD + Constellation Alpha with 5cm extension, Virpil CM2 throttle, Virpil Ace Interceptor pedals, Virpil Rotor TCS base + Blackshark grip, Winwing Triple MFD and ICP, Virpil panel 3, 34" UWHQD screen Secondary system: Acer Nitro 5, i7-12700h, RTX 4060, 32 GB, Win 11, Virpil Rotor TCS base + Blackhawk grip, Virpil Ace Torq pedals, WinWing Viper Ace EXII stick, WinWing Strike Ace EXII throttle, WinWing PTO 2 panel 34" UWHQD screen
portman Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 There are two German books I can recommend regarding recollections: Karl-Heinz Maxwitat: MiG-21 - Erlebnisse, Fakten, Hintergründe Rainer Langener: Mein Leben auf dem Schleudersitz Mancher zum Meister sich erklärt, dem nie das Handwerk ward gelehrt!
Don Rudi Posted June 30, 2016 Author Posted June 30, 2016 Thanks, I think I saw one of them on Amazon. But these cover "only" the LSK-LV or other air forces as well? Modules/maps: all, except for the Dora My missions: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/filter/user-is-Don rudi/apply/ Primary system: i7-13700k, RTX 4080, 32 GB, Win 11, Virpil WarBRD + Constellation Alpha with 5cm extension, Virpil CM2 throttle, Virpil Ace Interceptor pedals, Virpil Rotor TCS base + Blackshark grip, Winwing Triple MFD and ICP, Virpil panel 3, 34" UWHQD screen Secondary system: Acer Nitro 5, i7-12700h, RTX 4060, 32 GB, Win 11, Virpil Rotor TCS base + Blackhawk grip, Virpil Ace Torq pedals, WinWing Viper Ace EXII stick, WinWing Strike Ace EXII throttle, WinWing PTO 2 panel 34" UWHQD screen
portman Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 Only LSK-LV. Mancher zum Meister sich erklärt, dem nie das Handwerk ward gelehrt!
Don Rudi Posted July 1, 2016 Author Posted July 1, 2016 I'll have a look, thanks. Anyone else any recommendations covering the russian MiGs or MiGs in the near/middle east? Basher54321 Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Expensive series but the Arab MiGs volumes on here is good value in my opinion. http://www.harpia-publishing.com/ And there are some little gems here if you search https://ospreypublishing.com/mig-21-units-of-the-vietnam-war https://ospreypublishing.com/mikoyan-gurevich-mig-21 https://ospreypublishing.com/f-15c-eagle-versus-mig-23-25 Not sure if these are published in German - the authors are multinational
Retu81 Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 There's a good book that I recommend called Suomen Ilmavoimien lentokoneet - Mig-21 in Finnish Air Force by Jyrki Laukkanen. It gives a really good history, technical overview and pilot's perspective on Mig-21-F-13 and Mig-21bis in Finland. The author is a former air force test pilot with over 1000 flight hours in Mig-21. The book is bilingual: it's written both in Finnish and English. Problem is that the availability is pretty poor as the publisher went bankrupt couple of years ago.
Don Rudi Posted July 1, 2016 Author Posted July 1, 2016 Thanks a lot, especially the Harpia Publishing books look very promising. Language doesn't matter too much, I prefer english titles, but also have french, dutch, spanish and polish books. Good books in german are very rare. Modules/maps: all, except for the Dora My missions: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/filter/user-is-Don rudi/apply/ Primary system: i7-13700k, RTX 4080, 32 GB, Win 11, Virpil WarBRD + Constellation Alpha with 5cm extension, Virpil CM2 throttle, Virpil Ace Interceptor pedals, Virpil Rotor TCS base + Blackshark grip, Winwing Triple MFD and ICP, Virpil panel 3, 34" UWHQD screen Secondary system: Acer Nitro 5, i7-12700h, RTX 4060, 32 GB, Win 11, Virpil Rotor TCS base + Blackhawk grip, Virpil Ace Torq pedals, WinWing Viper Ace EXII stick, WinWing Strike Ace EXII throttle, WinWing PTO 2 panel 34" UWHQD screen
Don Rudi Posted July 1, 2016 Author Posted July 1, 2016 Thanks Retu81, that is exactly the kind of book I was looking for :) Modules/maps: all, except for the Dora My missions: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/filter/user-is-Don rudi/apply/ Primary system: i7-13700k, RTX 4080, 32 GB, Win 11, Virpil WarBRD + Constellation Alpha with 5cm extension, Virpil CM2 throttle, Virpil Ace Interceptor pedals, Virpil Rotor TCS base + Blackshark grip, Winwing Triple MFD and ICP, Virpil panel 3, 34" UWHQD screen Secondary system: Acer Nitro 5, i7-12700h, RTX 4060, 32 GB, Win 11, Virpil Rotor TCS base + Blackhawk grip, Virpil Ace Torq pedals, WinWing Viper Ace EXII stick, WinWing Strike Ace EXII throttle, WinWing PTO 2 panel 34" UWHQD screen
Art-J Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 History-wise, Gordon's and Dexter's "Mikoyan MiG-21" from Midland Publishing is still the bible for English-speaking readers, despite some inaccuracies here and there. It is a massive and generally rather good book, no pilot's recollections in it though, and You have to sell Your kidney to buy a printed copy nowadays... ... unless You're OK with diving into shady parts on internet for illegal scan of it. It's Your call. i7 9700K @ stock speed, single GTX1070, 32 gigs of RAM, TH Warthog, MFG Crosswind, Win10.

It's Your call. Seeing the speculation on this book, I had to ask: Hi, There are no currently plans to reprint Yefim Gordon’s MiG-21 Famous Russian Aircraft title, however we will log your interest and please feel free to contact us again regarding this. Many thanks, Charlotte Sales and Marketing Team Crecy Publishing So disappointing, but expected I suppose. Anyone knows why they stopped the publishing of this apparently great book? I own a couple of others from one of the authors (Yefim Gordon) and they're full of interesting details for who likes that sort of things, very good books on the Farmer and the Flanker. There's a new one about to be released, though I have no idea whether it's good or not, I'll wait for reviews: "The Mig-21: The Legendary Fighter/Interceptor in Russian and Worldwide Use, 1956 to the Present", Holger Muller (expected early 2019). The Osprey booklet is not bad but very succint. System specs: Win7 x64 | CPU: i7-4770K | RAM: 16 GB | GPU: GTX 980 Ti 6 GB | Thrustmaster HOTAS | MFG rudder pedals | SATA3 SSD | TrackIR
MiG21bisFishbedL Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 It's a huge book, probably costs quite a bit to print. I love my copy, for sure. Reformers hate him! This one weird trick found by a bush pilot will make gunfighter obsessed old farts angry at your multi-role carrier deck line up!
Redglyph Posted December 28, 2018 Posted December 28, 2018 Yes it is... it must take some time to read. What makes me laugh is how much people try to sell it on Amazon, eBay and so on. Well, good for them if they succeed. It could be due to a 2nd edition in the works, they did the same for the Su-27 to add new material (30, 33, 34, 35 variants). I'm not sure there is a lot of new material for the Fishbed to justify that, however, it's probably just wishful thinking.
