DCS Modding scene news

Hey guys,

I have been thinking about two important parts of DCS, that is community and mods.

 

A lot of great people are contributing to DCS in one way or another, many spending their free time to create something awesome for everybody and for free, like Starway with his textures pack or Hoggit guys who are making A-4. Problem is that not everybody is daily on different forums, or checking other channels, so lot of people might miss these great mods.

 

So my suggestion is, that ED/Wags could make for example once a month Youtube video or something like mods Newsletter. ED is most likely through moderators on forums well aware of great stuff developed by modders, so it shouldn't be a problem for ED, to put the most interesting things done in past month together and present them to us, virtual pilots.

 

I think, that this would be profitable for ED, modders and community alike.

There's no reason why a community member couldn't do this. Some community websites and/or video bloggers already touch on it on occasion.

 

I'd rather not have ED spend time doing it.

 

Perhaps you should give it a shot?

Wags (and team for that matter) is a pretty busy, and I think he is like me and doesnt mod his install much (and for testing versions, modding your install is a no no anyways) so not sure he or anyone else on the team could really devote any time to this.

The community makes them then the community can show them off. Wag, and the rest of ED, already have jobs.

making such a video isn't a one or two hours job ... its too much for the team from my POV, its not like for example "StarCitizen" who got a budget for hiring people who do this videos on weekly basis.

 

from another Point of view me as a someone who makes DCS and other game videos.. edit time and upload time and scripting time takes atleast 10 hours for a proper video and again too bad wasting time on that unless there is something big to show for example the F5E teaser\trailer.

If a couple guys got together and did a weekly or monthly podcast or something based on DCS I would watch it, I know Dojo does something like this, but more focused on their group I think. I think another couple guys tried to start something like this but dont think it went anywhere.

It does not have to be video, I'd happy with simple short article. It's likely, that somebody already do something like this, I just haven't found it. My problem is, that I lack time to search for things like this, I'm just glad if find myself time to fly...

Most modders have no problem advertising their own mods sufficiently across multiple sites.

There are four places I visit frequently to stay in the loop about what you call "community and mods":

 

The Mission and Campaigns section - some really great and fun missions pop up there from time to time

The Mission Builder's Corner - some funny and awesome scripts and other things lying around there, to play with and to integrate them in my missions

The Mods and Apps sections - including the subsections; almost everything mod related is in there... this may be your daily place to step by if you are looking for news

Finally, the user files - there are some hidden gems :)

 

You don't need to be checking them daily. If there is something really hot, you will almost always notice a big fat new thread if you come back a few days later.

But even if you go and check these places daily, you don't need a lot of time. These aren't the most active forum sections (although they can be crowdy at times).

 

As Sith said, if a couple of guys took their time to create 'something' weekly or monthly about new mods or whatever from the community, I would certainly watch/read it.

But I have full understanding that none from the dev team does it. And in all honesty, I wouldn't want them to! Just as Esonub posted, I know first hand that it is a huge amount of work to produce a *good* video. And I bet the amount of work is equal for an article or a podcast.
