I haven't been playing for a while, and I was surprised to see the tiger is available already.

So this begs the question, how's the early access going? Is it pretty playable? It's a foregone conclusion that I'll get this plane pretty much because I'm super excited for mig21 v f5, but I'm just curious how far along it is.

BST made a great job with the F-5E, it is very playable, and fun to fight against the MiG-21,

I really recommend the F-5E, It's a great dogfighter!

I'd give it a "mostly excellent".

The flight model and most of the avionics are top-notch and work fantastic; it's a joy to fly and maneuver.

However, it is saddled by two immense flaws, which I hope are rapidly rectified: (edit: I am told they've been hotfixed; happy days!)

BST ninja-patched these issues in the past couple weeks, disregard above; I haven't fired up F5 in a couple weeks due to work obligations eating my time

If you want to dogfight, it's probably best to wait until BST sorts those two issues. I'm sure they will, it's just a matter of how long it might take. Could be a while for the AIM-9P5; the missiles aero model in DCS has been iffy for a *long* time without much visible progress. But, if BST ninja-patched these issues in the past couple weeks, disregard above; I haven't fired up F5 in a couple weeks due to work obligations eating my time

Both issues have been resolved as of the 1.5.4 patch from last week. Arguably the 9P5s are still slightly underperforming... but both they and the A/A1 gunsight mode is working.

Well, that's good news indeed. I'll have to find some time to get some dogfight iterations in, then.

edit: oh, good, AIM-9P5 is more or less working. It now locks from front aspect (at least at short range) and can reach out to about 3nm tail-chase at 25,000 feet (not that I would expect kills beyond maybe 2nm... which is about right). It's actually a useful missile now! ...after struggling with the 9P5 at module release, the corrected version feels so easy to employ!

I just got in my first dogfight in my mig21 vs the f5 in multiplayer, and it was amazing. So glad there's a competitor for the 21 now.

This has been the most fun I've ever had in the mig21, I love it. That and the info in here was enough for me, decided to go ahead and get it now.

BST, as usual, has given us a extremely high quality module. It's absolutely amazing. The F-5 has always been one of my favorite aircraft though since I was a kid so i'm just in a mind blown state.

Anyone who loves this hobby of ours really needs to treat themselves to this module. I'd honestly say it is a must get. I could go on for a while but i'll spare everyone and stop here.

Cheers

Been having a great time with it in Blue Flag. My kill ratio sucks, but it's a lot of fun to try and sneak up on people. This vid was from before the 1.5 fix for missile seeker FOV and AA1 gunsight. Trying to fight without those was definitely hard-mode...

This. The F-5E is a real treat. On the face of it for some people it seems dull, another "old" fighter, small armament... But it's way more fun than it seems. It's a challenge, but it's amazingly fun. In fact on some of the older planes their lack of "advanced" avionics and weapons are what make them so much more fun. You really have to work to earn your kills and stay alive. You don't just go up, push a handful of buttons and rack up kills. You also have to be mindful of energy and maneuvering. As well as your position and how you approach a fight. Definitely have to use the terrain and learn how and when to use the radar (and often not to use it at all). It's especially fun to use to swat down people flying the more advanced birds as well. They can be pretty complacent and if you know how to position yourself you can really wreck their day. They get pretty pissed off when they realize not only did they get shot down by an F-5, but that they got shot down by an F-5 they couldn't see. It really grates on their nerves.

It's definitely a welcome release. It's hard to decide if it or the MiG-21 belong at the top of the list of most bang for the buck/most well done all around, but I'd kind of give the edge to the F-5. The only thing on the horizon that looks like it might top it is the Tomcat.

10/10 music LOL

Thanks for sharing; that was some awesome footage.

@OneBlueSky; nice summary.

One thing I want to mention about this F-5 is that it performs exactly how I would have imagined.

You can especially feel it on approach and landing. I'm still flying this thing consistently and a lot.

I love 99% of the DCS modules (based on personal taste). I own all of them except 2 of the trainers.

I'm going to start flying this thing online now after working with it for two weeks solo. The videos people are posting is exactly how I imagined it would be. I love flying the Mig-21 too because of the play style. The dynamic is just tons of fun.
