Thing is, I'm currently looking for a monitor replacement..

Since I'm still using a Samsung 4:3 monitor SD TV format

Anyways, I'm opting to replace it with a Widescreen.. but I can't go beyond 20 inches because of my limited Table space..

..considering the size limit, most monitors I see within the size range don't have DVI ports, mostly VGA although a few have HDMI ports..

with that, Is DVI an older tech? and that I should just go HDMI and find a supporting HDMI cable instead?

Thanks^

DVI and HDMI are the same thing essentially. DVI is the video component of HDMI. HDMI is DVI plus audio. There are metal-to-metal adapters (no signal processing) which convert DVI and HDMI. Get either with HDMI being slightly preferable as a more secure and convenient cable.

Whatever you do don't get VGA-only. That's analog and it's old and bad. It's OK if it has VGA as well but you want digital if at all possible.

Displayport is a very good connector but it's overkill for a small monitor and can't carry audio. It will be rare to find.

DP carries audio just fine... Also it's not that uncommon, most desktop monitors have display port nowadays alongside HDMI. It's uncommon for TVs though.

It depends on the monitor and graphics card. DP is an expremely versatile format, you can even transmit USB lanes over DP.

Depending on what monitor you aim to buy or already posses there are norms to watch out for or you wont be able to drive the newest of the newest monitors at full Hertz.

For 4k you need either HDMI 2.0 or DP 1.4 to achieve 60fps afaik, but I am not the video junkie.

My Asus for example only has DP, HDMI does not have enough bandwidth for the res and Hertz.

Any try to drive this monitor with an adapater have been fruitless, which is a pitty as some old cards and PC's I have dont have DP.

I would check for DP and HDMI, DVI is kind of outdated meanwhile as a formfactor. Also their are 2 DVI version, half and full bandwidth...

dont get confused but double check so that you dont end up on a cut branch

Computer screens with DP are few and far between and $$ i think I remember

in my upgrade path from a 40' 1080p TV and a gtx 970 i now have 1 eye on 4K televisions, a lot cheaper than computer screens and the prices dropping like a brick, that you can run with a HDMI 2.0 Video card (like gtx 970)

a way better path would be VR goggles, when one reads the reviews and experiences. Are dropping in $$$ also.

As always you need to have a platform with sufficient power to keep your system balanced

(unless you're willing to spend $$ like there is no tomorrow as some do).

Can you find a 20" monitor with DP? I found only 1.

Thank you for correcting me about DP and audio.

There's not that many monitors overall that are 20", but most i found feature DP.

If you consider 21.5", you'll find a lot more since 20" is an uncommon size.
