From the flight manual:

Continue the target approach until seeker lock-on audio tone is heard. Push and hold MISSILE UNCAGE switch.

Is this really needed? I have been playing around with missiles for a bit and did not know about this button, the missiles are working without holding this button. Does pressing this button have an positive impact on the performance of the missile?

It Depends.

What this button does is, if the button is pressed, the headtracker of the missile starts following the target, so you don need to keep the enemy in the pipper. What is this good for? Bassically for lead pirsuits dogfigth and low level flying.

It is not necessary it is just another tool. I use it just in case y cant follow the target properly, this way i have a firing solution for few more seconds

So If I keep the button pressed the angle I can launch at while the missile is still tracking the target successfully is larger? Is this correct?

Thanks for the clarifications!

It is also normal procedure to uncage in any US airplane (e.g. F-15 even with radar lock pointing the AIM-9 seeker) to make sure that the missile tracks on its own and tracks the right target before the launch.

Edit: I mean real life procedures

It's useful mainly for GAR-8s because their launch envelope is not that great. So you can aim at the target, when you hear the "tracking" sound you can uncage the seeker head and aim your aircraft in a way that the missile will fly into its envelope even if it wouldn't if you launched straight to the target.

wow, uncaging the missiles makes a huge different especially when shooting at a target being in a turn.

I can now point at the turning target (peeper sound) then hold the uncage button and turn my aircraft to lead the turning aircraft without the seeking loosing in and get a clean shot.

Thanks for asking the question. I am trying to learn from all these threads. Has anyone uncovered a video to explain the radar uses ? I have watched Bunyaps and it is very informative but not enough:)

I am sure others will be able to give you a much more detailed answer but here is a quick one. As I understand it, the radar is used to find potential targets within it's 40nm range, and also provide firing solutions when in Dogfight Missile (DM) mode or Dogfight Guns (DG) mode at close range. What I mean by firing solutions in that there will be different cues on the gunsight reticle that let you know when you are in range and the reticle will also help lead the target when using guns. In regards to searching for targets, I typically have AWACS up and rely on them to provide vectors to the target instead of using the radar in search mode.

I haven't found a video but take a look at the guide posted in the following link. It does a great job on going over the function and control of the radar in it's different modes.
