baltic_dragon Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 Hey guys, Working on the training campaign for A-10C in Nevada, we started to discuss whether when applying radio filters for player's VOs we should use the same logic as for other flights (so distortion and some static in the background) or not? After all, when you are in the pit and talk to the mic yourself, you won't hear the static or distortion, your voice will be only muffled by the O2 mask... or am I wrong? What are your thoughts about this? This is quite important, as in the first mission (startup / landing / shut down training) we have around 350 voiceovers... :D For more information, please visit my website. shagrat Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 Depends, if the mic input is patched through to your headphones (like a monitoring setup in studio recording). Then you would hear yourself as through the mic (300Hz to 3.5kHz), but without any static or crackle/noise from the transmission, yet a little distortion from the proximity to the mic can occur. baltic_dragon Posted September 16, 2016 Author Posted September 16, 2016 And do you know how would it work in real life? I mean is your mic patched to your earphones in modern jets? shagrat Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 And do you know how would it work in real life? I mean is your mic patched to your earphones in modern jets? No, that needs to be answered by a Jet-Pilot... Maybe you want to drop Eddie or Sierra99 a PM? Apache600 Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 And do you know how would it work in real life? I mean is your mic patched to your earphones in modern jets? Yes (at least in the commercial airline stuff) you can hear yourself transmit very clearly. Shagrat basically nailed it on the head. You'd probably want to chop off the top and bottom hz range, because like he said, it is you hearing yourself from the mic and through your little headset speakers. When we put our O2 mask's on (full face mask with forced oxygen flow) then there is a more muffled sound, and it's more difficult for me to listen to myself. But that's because I'm no longer wearing a headset. I'm now listening to myself through the speaker that's two feet above me head. ATC has no problem understanding me though, so I think it would be very similar to speaking from the boom mic. baltic_dragon Posted September 17, 2016 Author Posted September 17, 2016 Thanks guys! I think I will go for high / low pass filters but without background static. That should do the trick.
