New PC - do I need to deactivate modules on the old one?

Hello,

 

So I've got a new PC and planning to reinstall DCS in the next day or two. I've tried searching around, but don't see a definitive answer on what I will need to do if I start from scratch on a brand new PC. Do I need to to at this point deactivate modules on my old computer or are hardware changes so big that it won't matter and new activation will be used up no matter what?

 

Also, what is the latest word on deactivation - do I go into each individual module and run X_protect.exe or is there an updated procedure now?

Deactivate, always.

 

AFAIK, you will have to deactivate each module. I am a little out of the loop but I don't think that has changed.

correct. Deactivate each module using the protect.exe

I don't quite understand it. What's the point of deactivating in OP's case, if a new PC with new different components would trigger new activations being used anyway (that's the main point of his question I guess)?

Regardless of the component changes. Deactivating will still allow you to reuse an activation instead of burning another one.

Confirming that deactivating modules and then downloading them on a new PC did not trigger any new activations. I did however used up one deactivation for each of the modules - I wonder what happens when I run out of deactivations? Do they get replenished? Or am I going to be forced into using up my activations?

"Each game license has 10 activations and 10 deactivations, some modules has more than 10, all campaigns has 3.

You can activate your game up to 10 times, campaigns 3. The number of installations is unlimited!

This game also allows Activations Automatically (“AAA”) technology that enables you to create a new activation once every 31 days.

This function is enabled after all 10 (3) default activations have been used"

I just got my computer back from the shop after losing all my files to CERBER ransomware (it's a #$&*%^#(! While I have saved most of our pictures, and music (they were on another drive), the machine has been reformatted completely and all my DCS files are no more. I still have my serial numbers and emails from Eagle Dynamics confirming purchases, etc. (e-mails are a great thing if you aren't running for President).

I don't have any way of de- activating my content as my computer has no files associated with DCS left. Does anyone know what I can do; I am planning to download everything later in the week at a friend's house (extremely fast cable internet). I don't mind using up an activation, I just want to be able to get the whole thing back where it was. Any help would be immensely appreciated. :pilotfly:

you have lost an activation in this scenario, but do not worry, just install and activate and continue.

 

A guide to activation can be found in the root of DCS in the Doc folder

I always watch these threads and never get this. I have never bothered to deactivate and have rebuilt/upgraded quite a few times including all the issues with a LNS activation that went crazy on me and I've never not been able to activate my modules, presumably because the auto renewal on activations is way faster than my attempts to break my operating system? Could it be, that the security software actually works for me? Am I alone in my complete lack of fear? Is this an unusual situation?

Aside from losing an activation, everything reinstall and activate just fine.

Open regedit and check under local machine and local user if your DCS modules are listed. If yes, check that there is a folder underneath each modules named KEYS, if yes, delete this for each module and start-up DCS, it should ask you to (re)activate all your modules.

 

I should know, after a dead moptherboard forced me to upgrade CPU, mobo and RAM last week I went through the same procedure.

Hey Doc,

Sorry about that ransomware. That's a pain, and it sucks that people have to be destructive like that instead of constructive. I'm assuming that what you mean in terms of getting DCS back to where it was would be your control setups for each aircraft? I can send you the ones I have for the aircraft I fly (which is more than a few.) Feel free to private message me if you want/need to.
