Greetings everyone!

There has been a bit of a talk about LO not performing well on Dual core machines. I'd like to upgrade my comuter but I'm not sure if I should go with p4 3.4 or 2.4 dual.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

LOMAC not performing well on dual core machines?

All dual core is is two processors in one shell.

LOMAC, like 95% of other applications simply does not utilize both cores.

It works on one of the two cores provided.

So its performance is not harmed by the fact that you have two cores. It simply does not use both cores.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Any conroe will perform better then your current 3.4GHz on single core. The new archictecure is simply much faster and more efficient. And GHz of intel conroe is more equivilent to that of AMD isntead of old P4.

Just an example, which I know is not correct but just for demonstration sake is: Conroe 1.89 = P4 3.6

But my 1.89 is twice the speed of my P4 3.6 on pi calculations. But I also have faster DDR in comparsion to my P4 rig so proccessor alone does not take the full prize here.

But once you get games and applications to actually use both cores then the speed is going to be 4x that of a p4 3.6 hypothetically speaking

Well, right now all mainstream CPu's are all dual core. The only exception to this are Celeron and Sempron processors. I advise you to get dual core, not because of the 2 CPU's because its the only reasonable way to upgrade.

Ill keep mine untill quad cores arrive.

some amchines cause stutter on LOMAC due to swich the games used core from the first core to the second consecutively. You can solve it by using PROCAF, tool, but better ask someone who already uses it. :)

I think, dual processors is future technologies! Many programs and games support dual processors, already. I have AMD Athlon 4400+ X2, i am happy ;)

Echo, definitely go with a Conroe, not just for LOMAC but it does everything else faster than a P4 3.4GHz. I just retired my P4 3.4GHz machine after having it almost 3 years, and I thought it was still the fastest thing out there. Wow was I ever wrong! :D This X6800 is between 3 and 5 times faster than my old rig, makes it look like a slow, fat dinosaur.

Remember, Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Extreme...stay away from the Pentium Ds. :smilewink:

Get Core 2 Duo, they are much better then Pentium4's ... and there's no problem with Starforce or anything else.

Core Duo X6800 Extreme

2GB Corsair XMS2 8500

ASUS P5N32SLI SE Deluxe

ASUS 7950GX2

ASUS PhysX P1

Creative X-FI

Runs sweet as, but I do have issues with 3D games when the memory is running in dual channel mode.

I've had to mount the modules so that they're not mounted as a pair and only run in single channel mode until ASUS can come up with a fix...

But as for dual core's, you'd be a mug not to...

The latest tendancy is more to go for Intel Core 2 Duo instead of Athlon X2 serie. Core 2 won the performance race since last july, I think. And by a fair margin. + you'll get rid of many heat issues and such.

After that it's all a matter of price, of course, but I'd advise for a Intel CPU. Something I don't usually do :P

Damn right about the heat thing... My Core Duo X6800 runs idle at 30'C and never exceeds 45'C, even with F.E.A.R. running at 1920x1200x32 with 4xAA and 16xAF
