Hawkeye60 Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 A month ago I was out in the yard doing clean up when I heard a sound to my right. I turned to see a small bird diving towards the ground with a Hawk in hot pursuit! In front of my house there is a gas grill. The small bird dove under the side tray, around and straight up into other trees. The Hawk was not so nimble! He slammed into the grill and fell to the ground dazed for a few moments. He then flew over to one of our cars and perched there, looking around for that rocket-ship little bird. So the question that comes to mind is, How many G's did that little bird pull in that maneuver? "Yeah, and though I work in the valley of Death, I will fear no Evil. For where there is one, there is always three. I preparest my aircraft to receive the Iron that will be delivered in the presence of my enemies. Thy ALCM and JDAM they comfort me. Power was given unto the aircrew to make peace upon the world by way of the sword. And when the call went out, Behold the "Sword of Stealth". And his name was Death. And Hell followed him. For the day of wrath has come and no mercy shall be given."
cichlidfan Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 I wouldn't have a guess about g's but I once saw a hawk slam into an office window so hard he was still unconscious when we walked outside to check on him. He was quite upset to wake up and find a bunch of humans standing around him. crazyeddie Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 Well, they reckon the Peregrine can stoop at upwards of 200mph (320kph) ... that's pretty damn fast to be going if you hit something, it might even spoil your day !!.
Hawkeye60 Posted January 6, 2017 Author Posted January 6, 2017 I watched a show where they studied Starlings. They found the birds could create a small sonic boom doing a dive maneuver. They even recorded it. So how fast is that? And how amazing is it that the birds "airframe" can withstand that kind of speed and maneuver? "Yeah, and though I work in the valley of Death, I will fear no Evil. For where there is one, there is always three. cichlidfan Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 (edited) So how fast is that? At a low altitude that would be in excess of 700mph. Impressive. As for the airframe, bird bones are very light and flexible. Over the years I have been involved in several pet related jobs. About ten years ago I spent time raising baby parrots, including a half dozen African Greys (more or less hawk sized birds). The amount of acceleration they can produce, in a short distance, is amazing. Just wondering. "Yeah, and though I work in the valley of Death, I will fear no Evil. For where there is one, there is always three. To an extent, probably. The problem with an aircraft wing compared to a bird wing is flexibility . Birds can make many small adjustments to the contour of their wings, which is why they can maneuver so well (most of the time). IIRC, the Tom Clancy 'Op Center' series includes a Global Hawk aircraft with variable wing surfaces. The real one, made by Northrup-Grumman, doesn't have that ability. probad Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 there's been exploration on it done with shape memory alloys, darpa's smartwing comes to mind.
cichlidfan Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 That is a very old study, 15 years or so, and it doesn't look like anything has been done with the results. It did look promising based on the publications I saw back then. IIRC, Northrup-Grumman was involved with that. BitMaster Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 There is a damn small bug that when it jumps produces an acceleration in excess of 600G. Saw it a few times long time ago TV, forgot the name of the Insect. Nature is amazing. For the bird...I guess way beyond 50G to pull almost a 180 and come to a stop 1 foot later..which is WOW...A M A Z I N G. My pal used to dive his RC heli with 200km/h perpendicular to the ground and BANG STOP REVERSE it in no time, which he said is about 30-50G on the Log-Meter, depending on actual speed and diameter. SO I guess its somewhere around there...above 30..below 80 or 100 I guess Gigabyte Aorus X570S Master - Ryzen 5900X - Gskill 64GB 3200/CL14@3600/CL14 - Sapphire Nitro+ 7800XT - 4x Samsung 980Pro 1TB - 1x Samsung 870 Evo 1TB - 1x SanDisc 120GB SSD - Heatkiller IV - MoRa3-360LT@9x120mm Noctua F12 - Corsair AXi-1200 - TiR5-Pro - Warthog Hotas - Saitek Combat Pedals - Asus XG27ACG QHD 180Hz - Corsair K70 RGB Pro - Win11 Pro/Linux - Phanteks Evolv-X

cichlidfan Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 (the following paragraph is from Thor Hanson's Feathers, published by Basic Books, 2011) The falcon and a lure were released at an altitude of 3000 feet; the falcon accelerated to 157mph before catching the lure and pulling out of her dive with only fifty-seven feet to spare. The gravitational force on her body at that moment was calculated at 27 G's. :) ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Hero, i7-6700K, Noctua NH-D14 Cooler, Crucial 32GB DDR4 2133, Samsung 950 Pro NVMe 256GB, Samsung EVO 250GB & 500GB SSD, 2TB Caviar Black, Zotac GTX 1080 AMP!
