Fish Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Recently changed over from a CRT to a TFT, and while overall the viewing pleasure is significantly improved, there is one downside which i see.In large changes in the image, ie quick movements, the image seems to 'tear' like as if its not updated quickly enough, and a 'line' ripples fleeting across or up the image. I imagine it has something to do with the refresh rate or response time, but i would like to understand what is happening. The monitor boasts a 6ms response time, (grey to grey). and at my current resolution, it refreshing at 60mhz. BTW, the above problem is not confined to Lomac. Im sure there's a thread somewhere that explains this. A pointer would even help. Pilotasso Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Its a normal issue, even though some brands are better at it than others. What TFT screen you got, what is the response time? .
Mobius1 Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Sounds like ghosting, but you shouldn't really notice it on a 6ms monitor. I've got an 8ms monitor and have never noticed it at all, even in the fastest paced FPS games. EDIT: Apparently it's not ghosting, so don't listen to me. Stupid thermals...
Mustang Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Tried forcing v-sync on in display properties?
Pilotasso Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Mines a Fujitsu/siemens 12ms. Im happy with it. Colors good and no tearing. BTW tearing is different than ghosting. .
Fish Posted November 10, 2006 Author Posted November 10, 2006 Thanks for the quick reply all. (nice to hear from you Mustang).. Yeah Pilotasso, its 'Tearing' not ghosting. 6ms response time. Mustang, Im looking at my catalyst control panel but cant see any vsynch option. Can you help? Im using the new control panel, and it lumps DX and OpenGl together.. hitman Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 I was just wondering..Ive seen a lot of ppl having problems with Ati / nvidia chipset combos (I was one of them) and the big issue was with Vsync. Ill dig more up on this one in a few.
hitman Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Here are some drivers you "might" want to try...they are NG drivers and all nicely tweeked. http://www.ngohq.com/ You might want to dig through them and see what you can try...
Mustang Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Hmmm, since i've never used the CCC with any of the catalyst drivers, i'm a bit unsure where the v-sync options are, however, you could try ATI Tray Tools to manually control D3D v-sync, see pic below http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=733 (P.S latest version of ATT has something like 12 new Anti-Aliasing modes to play with, in conjuction with the 6.10 driver, screenie attached)
Snake_Eyes Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 In the Catalyst Control Centre 3D Settings : Wait for Vertical Refresh: This option controls Vertical Synchronization in games, and there are four choices here: Always Off - Vertical Sync will always be set to Off, regardless of the setting in the game or 3D application. This provides fastest performance but may result in image "tearing" which can be annoying to some. Off, Unless Application Specifies - Vertical Sync will be off by default, however if you choose to enable it in a game or 3D application, it will be enabled for that game/app. This is the recommended mode. On, Unless Application Specifies - Same as above, except Vertical Sync will be on by default unless otherwise disabled in a particular game or 3D application. Always On - Vertical Sync will always remain on, regardless of the setting in the game or 3D application. This is not recommended, as it may reduce performance however it guarantees that there will never be any screen "tearing".
SuperKungFu Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Tried forcing v-sync on in display properties? I have the same problem but i have a nvidia 7900, how do you enable V-sync on this? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Fish Posted November 10, 2006 Author Posted November 10, 2006 Sorted. Thanks to all. Vsynch solved it. Had to dig out an old Catalyst CC (control center) file, uninstalled the current one, and installed this. This allowed me to select Vsynch on. Diden't have to change drivers! Like this CC, cause it allows custom settings for OpenGL and DX. (im using cat 5.11. For me they still the best for overall performance!!). LazerPotatoe Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Which connector are you using between the video card and the monitor: DVI or VGA? I think that using the DVI connection will give you better quality as well. (because it's digital/less interference?) Cheers, LP LP modules: F5-E / A4-E / A-10A / AJS-37 / SA-342 / UH-1H / Ka-50 / Mi-8 / CA would buy: OH-58 /AH-64A / AH-1 / Sepecat Jaguar / F-111
Mobius1 Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 BTW tearing is different than ghosting. Oops, my mistake. I'll fix it. Stupid thermals...
Fish Posted November 11, 2006 Author Posted November 11, 2006 Well thanks to all once again, Its a dVi connection im using. and since ive got it running nice in lomac, , and ive taken some pics. Ive upped the res from 1360x1024 to 1920x1200, and it shows no change of FPS in a test track i use with a lot of activity. I wonder does the vsynch 'even' out the frame rate somwhat?Stuttering of explosions is definitely much less noticable. Maybe it shows how the cpu and not the graphics board is the fps limiting factor. Probably food for another thread..... Pilotasso Posted November 11, 2006 Posted November 11, 2006 glad it worked out for you. Your screen is sure good enough for the games. Enjoy. .
