carss Posted February 18, 2017 Posted February 18, 2017 Hope this isn't a stretch to ask, but saw a post on facebook where someone suggested a free FC3 level Ka-27. And personally thought it was a brilliant idea, a small simple heli with a simple cockpit for free and search an rescue missions. Gives a heli to the newbies to try or anyone who hasn't tried a heli. Plus a small simple heli for carrier or Naval ops too. 1 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Planes: FC3, P-51, F-86, F-5E, Mirage 2000, F/A-18, F-14, F-16, Mig-19P :joystick: ED pls gib A-4 and F-4
Buzzles Posted February 18, 2017 Posted February 18, 2017 What's in it for ED? Helicopters in DCS seem to require either the PFM or an EFM written to AFM standards (Gazelle). That's a fair bit of work with associated costs. You're also asking for new features (SAR) to be developed. Also cost. ED already supply two free aircraft, and while I can see why a helo would be nice, I can't see it being worth while. Plus, I'd rather see a full module rather than a simple FC3 level Helo. We already have multiple full module helicopters. However I don't think everyone will be willing to pay for Helis knowing whether or not it's worth it. And once it's bought, it's bought. And it's a simple and small heli that can be used for beginners and armed with nothing but anti sub and S&R roles (plus we have new subs and upcoming subs which mostly means future sub warfare in DCS) However now it would be mainly (S&R) and can be a great starting Heli for those getting into the UH-1 and Mi-8 and the many newer Helis yet to come to DCS. Just as how we have the Su-25T and a full fidelity TF-51D, and both these planes are great to transition into either FC3 planes or full fidelity 3rd party modules. 98abaile Posted February 19, 2017 Posted February 19, 2017 That still doesn't answer the question: "What's in it for ED?" Unless there is a financial incentive to do so, why would they spend time on it?
cichlidfan Posted February 19, 2017 Posted February 19, 2017 Keep and mind that both of those aircraft were developed as paid modules, or part of one. ED did not have to eat the entire development cost, which they would have to do if they made something merely to give it away. I also think adding more free aircraft to DCS World would create more users who will never buy anything. probad Posted February 19, 2017 Posted February 19, 2017 you seem to be under the impression that code grows on trees.
Home Fries Posted February 19, 2017 Posted February 19, 2017 While I would never turn down a free module, and I get the marketing perspective of the OP, I think the Huey already hits the sweet spot. FC3 level doesn't necessarily mean easier; there are plenty of things I would love to do in FC3 by clicking the cockpit (fuel/weps jettison) that I have to map to the MFD or remember a key combination. The Huey already has a great flight model and simple avionics so that somebody interested in learning how to fly helos could start here without having to worry about a complicated cold start or system integration. Someone who is truly interested in learning how to fly helos can pick up the Huey and will not be disappointed unless they're expecting to be Robert Mason within the first hour. The same crowd may be put-off by a realistic free Ka-27 after a few hours of trying to hover (if they last that long), and the work by ED might actually cost them income. I stand by my original assertion that door gunners should be open to anybody in multiplayer. The position doesn't require cockpit instruments, so it could probably work with the current copy protection, and this feature could extend now to the Mi-8. I think this is the way to get more helo drivers into the game. -Home Fries My DCS Files and Skins My DCS TARGET Profile for Cougar or Warthog and MFDs F-14B LANTIRN Guide
