LG Ultrawide 29UM68 Full HD 29" IPS LED Monitor ?

Recommended Posts

I am seriously thinking of going wide screen for my flight simming and this LG looks great for the money,is anybody else out there in DCS land using one of these an LG Ultrawide 29UM68 Full HD 29" IPS LED Monitor.

Also, this is flat, would it be beneficial to go curved ?

Any help or advice would be warmly appreciated, thanks guys.

IMHO, pass on the smaller ultrawides and go straight to a 34".

1080p is a bit too low on res for 27"+ imho.

QHD is better suited for that... or 4k

+1 to that, the 34" is about the same height as a 27" 1080p, but with about 2-3" extra at either side. Perfect for flight and driving sims. The 29 ultrawides actually look quite small in the flesh to me. I've been very happy with mine.

Edit: have you considered an oculus rift? check out the VR part of the forum, you might end up spending your money elsewhere. Most time I spend in DCS is in the rift these days, it's amazing.

Ok,thanks to the great advice here,I'm going to go for one of these an LG 34UM68 Full HD 34" IPS LED Monitor, and at £429 PC World,it also offers great value for money.

Thanks again guys for the top advice.

@ John Hargreaves No John I haven't considered an oculus rift,it's a bit too expensive for my budget, but thank you for your advice on the 34'' monitor.

The LG 34UM68 is only 2560x1080, I would strongly recommend going 3440x1440 for a 34" Ultrawide although I appreciate this bumps up the cost significantly.

Windows 10 Home, Intel Core i7-9700K @ 4.6GHz, Gigabyte GTX 1070 G1 Gaming (8GB VRAM) on 34" LG curved monitor @ 3440x1440, 32GB RAM, TrackIR 3 (with Vector Expansion), Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS, Saitek Combat Pedals, Thrustmaster Cougar MFDs.

hey that's what i bought a few days ago! it's perfect for my desk. it all depends on how far you sit from your monitor. 34'' would have been too large for me. just take a measure tape and compare your screen with 29 and 34. you'd come to a better conclusion. bigger isn't always better.

The higher res is definitely superior for image quality, but the lower res is better for performance due to chucking around significantly fewer pixels. The balance of the other parts of the system is a factor.

As regards size, you very quickly get used to having this screen on your desk, and it's great for general PC work as you can have several decent sized windows on the desktop.

Absolutely. I have a Dell 27" 2560x1440 resolution. IMO this resolution paired with a 27" monitor is the perfect fit. I could never tolerate 1080p res with a 27" or bigger monitor. My next monitor will be no less than 34" in size with resolution 3440x1440. Target refresh rate also will be 100hz to 120hz and of course with GSync.

My old 60hz Dell I just don't feel the love in gaming anymore and I have personally witnessed a friend with a high refresh GSync monitor and there is simply no comparison.

You have to see&feel it to believe it I guess. This Gsync ( hopefully FreeSync as well ) makes such a big difference in how you percept motion through a screen.

Do they have any of that miracle stuff in VR btw ?

I have the 29UM67 and am very happy with it. It is a great general use monitor. LG is hard to beat for color reproduction, and the aspect ratio is incredibly utilitarian. I will, however, echo the sentiment that, if you can hack it, more pixels might give you a competitive advantage.

Also, when using TrackIR, looking side to side becomes pretty easy, but the vertical plane becomes a little bit problematic. The caveat to that statement is that it could have something to do with my setup or that I'm using TrackIR 4 instead of 5. But after about a year of trying to make it work, it still glitches when I nearly reach the top and bottom of the viewing arch and can be a bit uncomfortable to look that far up and down.
