its funny how this SAm scene from Behind enemy lines was parodied in a Eurofighter promotional video ( even using the same sound effects)

Ugh, I had to endure that twice during the presentation of the Eurofighter in Ottobrun. I was having a hard time from bursting out in laughter.

I love the plane and I'll always a soft spot in my heart for her... but that video was just straight out of a garbarge landfill.

The sim mentioned on that thread had an interesting immersive plot scenario (more than 40 missions total):

Training: Miramar

Conflicts: Cuba > North Korea > Libya

Hopefully if HB include a 'Libyian Incident' scenario it will encompass some of the actual aspects of the encounter, not just "F-14's out patrolling shoot down Mig-23s"

There are more details from this story that are not in this story regarding a Navy EP-3E electronic intelligence aircraft flying in support of the battle group and the reason the Migs were even out over the water (something they were not known to do- very poor pilots). I know this because I was a young airman flying in the back of that EP-3E flying out of Athens.

Let's just say that there were some puckered butts on that EP-3E and leave it at that. I'm sure the author provided the best information he has available to him. It was an exciting time in the Med at that time for young aviators given the Cold War and geopolitical events.

Having been P-3 crew I can totally understand the 'puckered butts' onboard! - I bet they were 4600hp 400 KIAS in the opposite direction!

It's not explicitly about the F-14, however VF-84 (and a few shots of VF-41) are featured pretty front and center. There's also a bit of sweet RF-8G action.

if you think Top gun is just a "teenager drama" i suggest you watch Iron eagle now

That's a real " teenage drama" or rather more of a teen fantasy movie.

It's a fun movie with high production standards, but a military movie it isn't. Take it as that and your time with it will be well spent.

For some of the best F-14 footage out there, go with The Final Countdown. Have you ever seen an F-14A in AS/CAP configuration perform a hard break? Or nearly stall at less then 250 KIAS? Now you will! :pilotfly:

I herd when I was in the Navy that the pilot that did the low stall maneuver lost his wings for it.

If it is the scene I am thinking of, there really was no danger at all, they had plenty of altitude and was in controlled flight the entire time. It looked worse than it was because of camera angle and Fstop. The pilot discusses it on the extras on the DVD I have where they interview the pilots who flew those missions over a two week shoot in Key West I believe. Something like that. He said he did have to discuss it on the phone with a flag officer after the dailies, but once he did it was all good.

The best part of the interview to me was when they shot the aerial refueling sequence and the camera man sat in the tail of a modified B-24 or 26 or something and waved the pilot in close so be could touch the nose with his foot. He got a real shock out of it. :music_whistling: Oh, and the fact that the union van driver who drove the pilots back and forth made more per month than the pilots did :)

The photo plane was a B-25 :)

And yeah, the low stall pull out wasn't as low as they made it look, I think he said they pulled out at a few hundred feet. Risky? Yeah..but not the OMG EXTREME DANGER they hyped it to be in the film by dubbing in his wifes scream over the sound track lol
