Xxx Posted April 17, 2017 Posted April 17, 2017 I just flew a mission where I had a left engine fire after getting ground fire. Couldn't stop the flames from the damaged engine. I had pulled left fire handle, left engine thrust lever off, left fuel pumps off. I assumed the engine was shutdown? Now I must have missed a step due to the continued flames all the way back to base [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]i7 Haswell @ 4.6Ghz, Z97p, GTX1080, 32GB DDR3, x3SSD, Win7/64, professional. 32" BenQ, TIR 5, Saitek x55 HOTAS. flyco Posted April 17, 2017 Posted April 17, 2017 You often get continuous smoke all the way home, and sometimes flames. Did the Fire light go out in the T-handle? Provided the flames are from the engine and do not reach the fuselage or tail surfaces, I would be inclined to stick with it at least until you're over friendly territory.
Xxx Posted April 18, 2017 Author Posted April 18, 2017 you gotta flick the little black toggle next to the yellow T-handles Thanks chaps. The black toggle completely escaped me! Lights were on inside the left handle and the flames lasted all the way back to base, about 10 minutes flying time:cry: So it's pull the fire handle and click the toggle? The port vertical stabilizer should really have burned off, I guess I was just lucky! Thanks again. Cheers.:D [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]i7 Haswell @ 4.6Ghz, Z97p, GTX1080, 32GB DDR3, x3SSD, Win7/64, professional. 32" BenQ, TIR 5, Saitek x55 HOTAS. Search User Files for "herky" for my uploaded missions. BuzzU Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 I always assumed the fire was the fuel. So, if you shut off the fuel and it keeps burning. What's burning? It's all metal. Buzz
mvsgas Posted April 19, 2017 Posted April 19, 2017 I always assumed the fire was the fuel. So, if you shut off the fuel and it keeps burning. What's burning? It's all metal. The oil, hydraulic fluid, metal can burn also. Titanium, aluminum and other metal can burn. 1 To whom it may concern, I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that. Thank you for you patience. Many people don't want the truth, they want constant reassurance that whatever misconception/fallacies they believe in are true..
Yurgon Posted April 20, 2017 Posted April 20, 2017 Provided the flames are from the engine and do not reach the fuselage or tail surfaces, I would be inclined to stick with it at least until you're over friendly territory. Why that? Is there any reason to keep the fire going? I can't think of one. Especially while one flies over enemy territory. :smartass:

Cheers.:D Glad we could help. yes, when you pull the yellow handle, that opens the selected discharge valve, but it does not discharge until you flick the black toggle either way. you only get two discharges, so you can open more than one valve(I believe),but I'm not sure it would be beneficial to do it. pr1malr8ge Posted April 20, 2017 Posted April 20, 2017 The a10 has two extinguisher tanks tied togther. When one pulls the T-handle you open a valve that leads to its corresponding engine. The selector switch selects which bottle you will be using. This system was not implemented to be able to extinguish fires in multiple engines. Rather it's designed as a backup in case the first shot is not effective in extinguishing the fire. Or if re-ignition occurs later in the same engine. If you're dealing with a double engine fires I would suspect a punch out is suggested. 1 For the WIN [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]If your desired effect on the target is making the pilot defecate his pants laughing then you can definitely achieve it with a launch like that.
