Kim Hanson Posted July 2, 2017 Posted July 2, 2017 Amazing, truly amazing. The worldwide flying community and the worldwide meterological community both describe the wind by the direction it is coming from, but ED, in its infinite wisdom, thinks this is just silly and describes the wind by the direction it is heading. Aren't we special. I'm sorry for the snarky attitude but I am truly agog at this glaring mistake that apparently no-one has picked up on or perhaps no-one but me cares about. This should be fixed so as not to confuse a generation of future RL pilots.
Rangi Posted July 2, 2017 Posted July 2, 2017 It has been like that for a long time. PC: 6600K @ 4.5 GHz, 12GB RAM, GTX 970, 32" 2K monitor.

kunterbunt Posted July 2, 2017 Posted July 2, 2017 Ah, that is why the tower keeps sending me to the wrong runway. Never would have guessed that. My Rig: AMD Ryzen 9 3950X | 64GB DDR4-3200 Ram | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti | Thrustmaster Hotas Warthog | MFG Crosswind rudder pedals | HP Reverb
kunterbunt Posted July 2, 2017 Posted July 2, 2017 Strange I tried setting wind as expected and backwards, but tower will always send me to runway 32 at Groom Lake Nevada. I thought that they would try to send me to the runway and direction to always takeoff against the wind. Art-J Posted July 2, 2017 Posted July 2, 2017 Kim, the DCS community has been beating this dead horse literally for years (you might want to search the forum for multiple threads on the subject), and if you'd like to be next in the line with your big stick, feel free to do so, but it's never been a high priority issue for devs it seems. i7 9700K @ stock speed, single GTX1070, 32 gigs of RAM, TH Warthog, MFG Crosswind, Win10.

You just need to think like a windsock. :) Strange I tried setting wind as expected and backwards, but tower will always send me to runway 32 at Groom Lake Nevada. I thought that they would try to send me to the runway and direction to always takeoff against the wind. Usually it takes quite a bit of wind to get a change in runway from the default takeoff direction. Just for chuckles, create a headwind for the direction you want to take off and push the wind to maximum speed. Then you'll know if it's possible to force a change. After that you'll just need to adjust the wind speed to something lower that'll still let it work. Kim Hanson Posted July 5, 2017 Author Posted July 5, 2017 Posted by Art-J"you might want to search the forum for multiple threads on the subject" I did do a search and got nada, that's why I posted a brand new thread. I was more than willing to add my two cents to an existing thread. I am pleased that I am not the only one disgruntled with this silly mistake with (I believe) an easy fix.

I set to 50 meters per second and it did not change. My plane got swept way by the wind though. Did the tower ever actual take wind direction into account? Tested at Nellis airport. You did your search on a different day! Flaky as these forum search engines are, I don't expect to get the same results twice. I've done searches for the very thread I was looking at in real time and the seach engine could not find it.

Nellis seems to be a special case, the ATC never changes runway in use at Nellis. PC: 6600K @ 4.5 GHz, 12GB RAM, GTX 970, 32" 2K monitor.
kunterbunt Posted July 9, 2017 Posted July 9, 2017 Nellis seems to be a special case, the ATC never changes runway in use at Nellis. What? There are special airports? But I just love raking off at Nellie. It is big enough but not too near to the city to have a performance impact. Will try creech then. Anatoli-Kagari9 Posted July 9, 2017 Posted July 9, 2017 It's an "irritating feature", but I guess it may become addressed one of these days, just as recently they implemented METAR wind data to be relative to 10m AGL.... It also only makes your live more complicated when building a mission in the mission editor, because tower sends you to the correct rw after all. Frederf Posted July 9, 2017 Posted July 9, 2017 What? There are special airports? Yes there are.
kunterbunt Posted July 9, 2017 Posted July 9, 2017 Just checked in Creech and there it works. Tower sends me to the correct runway to takeoff against wind. Thanks!
