fitness88 Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 (edited) Is there a way to prevent the F-15 from showing up on the RWR? Is it a transponder that sends out the ID if so can it be turned off? Thank you. Edited August 11, 2017 by fitness88
QuiGon Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 RWR means Radar Warning Reciever. It tells you what radars are pointing at you. To avoid beeing shown on the enemy RWR, just switch your radar off (or point it in a different direction). Intel i7-12700K @ 8x5GHz+4x3.8GHz + 32 GB DDR5 RAM + Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080 (8 GB VRAM) + M.2 SSD + Windows 10 64Bit DCS Panavia Tornado (IDS) really needs to be a thing!
fitness88 Posted August 11, 2017 Author Posted August 11, 2017 Thanks for the info. I understood radar would always show up on the RWR but I thought there was also a transponder beacon that indicated the aircraft type even if the radar was turned off. Thanks again for the clarification.

Thanks again for the clarification. Nope, the RWR analyses the radar characteristics (e.g. frequency) and compares them to a database with known radars to identify the aircraft type. Well, it actually doesn't identify the aircraft type, but the radar type. The MiG-29 and Su-27 for example use the same radar, so a RWR can't distinguish between them. So when I see a MIG-29 symbol on my RWR...it could also be a SU-27. Interesting, I remember seeing MIG-29s on the RWR but not the Su-27, that must be the reason. Thanks.
Beamscanner Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 The MiG-29 and Su-27 radars for example use the same waveform, so a RWR can't distinguish between them. If two completely different radars happened to use the same waveform (PRF, RF, PD, Scan, etc.) the RWR wouldn’t know which one to call it and a misidentification could occur.
GGTharos Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 You'd get a mipple probably. I don't believe that the 27/29 radars cannot be distinguished. I'm rather biased too believe that the change in antenna size alone might drive desirable changes in PRFs and even frequencies used. fitness88 Posted August 12, 2017 Author Posted August 12, 2017 (edited) I just saw Su-27 on the RWR. BTW, off topic...when you call in 'vector to bulls eye', is the heading the AWACS call out, bearing from bulls eye to your position? Are bulls eyes usually put on a waypoint so the HSI can be used to quickly calculate? Edited August 12, 2017 by fitness88

Are bulls eyes usually put on a waypoint so the HSI can be used to quickly calculate? The AWACS will tell you if it's from bulls or from your aircraft. Most of the time it's from bulls unless a bandit is really close, then he'll tell you the location of him from your aircraft. You can set a waypoint to the bulls but i think more people are using the map for that.
QuiGon Posted August 12, 2017 Posted August 12, 2017 (edited) I just saw Su-27 on the RWR. Hmm, interesting. Maybe this has been changed, because previously the RWR showed Su-27 as MiG-29. This of course depends on the implementation of the RWR in DCS. I remember there has been some discussion when the M2000 came out, because its RWR was able to distinguish between the Flanker and the Fulcrum, which EDs birds could not (not quiet sure about F-15, but the A-10C RWR definately showed 27s as 29s). The RWRs in the game don't actually check wavelengths and frequencies, but just draw there information from the game engine, so it's up to the developer to decide how different contacts are beeing displayed.
