I just played most very first multiplayer match. I started in the F5 a plane that I love to fly. I also started on the open conflict server. I've been playing DCS if for several years as well as BMS. But like I said this was the first time ever time to play in a multiplayer match. I have several questions. Questions about comms, with teamspeak. Protocol and procedure questions and much more.

But my first question is how do I identify friend or foe in multiplayer, flying the F5. It's a simplistic aircraft and that is one thing that I enjoy about it. That being said I am afraid of shooting down a friendly aircraft. I have been using the F10 button to look at the map and see if the aircraft is a friend or foe.

I eventually would like to fly with other people doing co-op missions, and formation flying. But I would like to start with the basics and try not to shoot down friendlies. I will probably return to ask the other questions. Thanks in advance for your help.

The only way you can check is an aircraft is friendly or foe in a F-5 is either by:

1. Visually, if the server has aircraft sorted per side (e.g bluefor vs redfor aircraft), or has skins based on what side the aircraft is on.

2. F10 map, if that option is allowed on the server (as it is on Open Conflict).

3. And I believe you can lock the enemy using your radar and then IFF by calling AWACS if available, but I haven't tried this myself.

Hence usually outside of period settings (such as the Cold War server) the F-5E is mainly used for ground attack. The best way I've found in servers without redfor vs bluefor planesets and modern aircraft is to wait for an enemy to shoot at me, identifying him on my RWR, dodge the attacks using hills which I have been flying around for that purpose while I wait for him to close to Aim-9 range (where I can then visually identify and confirm them as the guy who shot at me on RWR) and then ambush them as they come in close.

I love flying the F5 multiplayer. Correct ID of friendly/foe is by far the biggest challenge in my opinion and there is no easy answer. I prefer to fly on the cold-war server where the aircraft are quite evenly matched and the visual ID is quite straightforward. Having said that, when your blood is up, the delta wing of the Viggen looks a lot like the delta of the Mig-21! I must admit that I have downed more than one blue jet, but so have a lot of other people :music_whistling: I have also been on the receiving end of plenty of friendly fire, that's just the way it is!

So my advice would be to fly on the cold-war server and hone your visual ID skills. Flying against Su-27/33 and Mig 29 (or even red F15s) is very hard in the F5 (and in my case, normally quite brief :megalol:)

yep the cold war serve is the best thing going. I really don't like the way most servers have all the planes on both sides. I want red planes v Blue planes for lots of reasons but one of them is so we can visually ID enemy planes.

Come fly on the cold war server it is full on the weekends. Hope that suits you

No, unlike other radar equipped aircraft, the F-5 has no IFF interrogator to identify foe or friend!

I was referring to the AWACS DECLARE function, not to the F-5 having any IFF interrogator itself (hence the need to call the AWACS, which would not be needed if the aircraft had it's own IFF interrogator.)

Indeed, you're right of course, sorry. I should read complete sentences before posting...

Me and a couple guys enjoy the challenge of taking the F-5 up against 4th gen jets and it very rewarding when you have a success (hint teamwork is key), our squad/server is really good with getting everyone on voice coms so my IFF is calling raygun and if I don't hear buddy spike... FOX 2

Sounds like I need to try the Cold War Server! I pretty excited to try my hand at multiplayer, probably will get my butt handed to me. That's okay, I will learn a lot from it. Thanks to everyone!
