Not a whirpool like I have ever seen before. Fluid dynamics alone doesnt explain this. SOme other massive forces are shaping that thing.

Thanks for the link to article. Nature is more surprising then we could imagine :)

I'm sure there's gonna be some sect of little green man followers that will use these images for some ugly rituals. LOL.

Water can create hexagonal ice crystals ... it shouldn't be too surprising to find such structures on the macroscopic scale, whatever the mechanism behind it is. It is certainly -neat- though :)

The hexagon is similar to Earth's polar vortex, which has winds blowing in a circular pattern around the polar region. On Saturn, the vortex has a hexagonal rather than circular shape. The hexagon is nearly 25,000 kilometers (15,000 miles) across. Nearly four Earths could fit inside it.

jesus.

Is it the result of global warming?

yes. and no. Saturn is basically an all gas planet and has warm polar climates.

Like it says, storms on gas planets like Saturn with that type of effect go on for over 10 years

The earth and Saturn have the same feature(vortex) around their polar regions...except Saturn's is more hexigonal and ours is more ovalish ;)

Hexagon found on Saturn...

Ok so does that mean that if I flush a toilet on Saturn that the water will flow in a hexagonal shape. Interesting must be caused through gravity then.:smilewink:

Was there a hexagon on the moon?

Hey GG, this is very surprising to a host of astrophysicists. The fact that a single cohesive structure (a water crystal) is hexagonal, does not provide strong support that a giant, disruptive system (as pictured) could take such form, particularly when Saturn's rotation and resulting centrifugal force is acting on the system.

"The smooth faces of crystals are caused by a regular internal arrangement of atoms." http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/gen99/gen99068.htm

Do you think that is likely on the scale observed?

Not having a dig mate, but the hexagon on Saturn shouldn't be dismissed as unsurprising. It is remarkable, and defies explanation today by top astrophysicists and scientists of suitable qualification.

Guess this means the toilet would be a bitch to clean out on a daily basis what with the heavy streaking that would be involved...
