OscarVictor11 Posted June 5, 2018 Posted June 5, 2018 I have a TM A10 stick and throttle and since installing F18 have been unable to steer accurately enough to take off. Have mapped steering wheelbrakes left and right to stick switches but as soon as I start to move it keeps turning right and only changes to left momentarily if I reduce throttle to a walking pace. S key makes no or little difference.............. I kind of 'waddle' down the taxiway and then lose control as soon as I open throttle! I'm obviously doing something wrong...........thanks Bob.
fitness88 Posted June 5, 2018 Posted June 5, 2018 As an example, I found the F15 was more controllable when above 50kts to disable NWS so only rudder will steer. Try doing the same.
norbot Posted June 5, 2018 Posted June 5, 2018 You should map 'Aircraft rudder left' an 'Aircraft rudder right' on your stick. F/A-18C has nosewheelsteering. It's not a WW2 aircraft that changes direction with the wheelbrakes. When using nosewheelsteering you should also feel the difference between pressed 's' and without. :)
idenwen Posted June 5, 2018 Posted June 5, 2018 Be sure to be in NWS and not in NWS HI mode for liftoff and when you're around 80-90 disable NWS and steer with the rudders. The switches can be a problem too since maybe the register as full rudder input, if available try an axis binding.
christiankirk81 Posted June 5, 2018 Posted June 5, 2018 It'll be tough to steer with buttons on the Hornet. If you want to do small corrections would mean quick taps, pressing and holding the button would mean a full deflection and you PIO. i7 9700k@5.0 Ghz, 32gb DDR4-3200, Maximus XI Formula, Asus Strix GTX 1080ti, 1TB NVMe Samsung 970 Evo, 1TB Samsung 860 Evo Windows 10 Pro 64-bit, TM Warthog, MFG Crosswind Graphite Black, Wheelstandpro Warthog Deluxe V2, TrackIR 5 Pro. majapahit Posted June 5, 2018 Posted June 5, 2018 Without a rudder axis you would probably simply take a dozen yards to roll slowly forward so you get a feel to where to point the aircraft to the end of the runway, and at that point you engage take-off throttle and disable NWS with the disengage "A" somewhere not too far above 60 knots, which means you're heading for rotate with rudders only ... | VR goggles | Autopilot panel | Headtracker | TM HOTAS | G920 HOTAS | MS FFB 2 | Throttle Quadrants | 8600K | GTX 1080 | 64GB RAM| Win 10 x64 | Voicerecognition | 50" UHD TV monitor | 40" 1080p TV monitor | 2x 24" 1080p side monitors | 24" 1080p touchscreen |
OscarVictor11 Posted June 5, 2018 Author Posted June 5, 2018 Thanks boys....sorted. For some reason my assigned settings had two right turn movements for two separate control inputs ie no left turn .....hmm..........odd, but I deleted both, corrected the error and all seems fine.

dburne Posted June 5, 2018 Posted June 5, 2018 EA has NWS HI mode? Yes it is a bind-able in the controller setup menu. Habu_69 Posted June 6, 2018 Posted June 6, 2018 (edited) Hmmmmm. I find 2 versions of NoseWheelSteering but nothing for NWS HI. Am I blind? (My wife says I am.) OK. Figured it out. Gotta toggle NWS normal to hi and ensure Launch Bar is not deployed. Does not seem to be documented yet. Edited June 6, 2018 by Habu_69
Frederf Posted June 6, 2018 Posted June 6, 2018 NWS HI you have to first turn on NWS LO with a tap and then press and hold it to keep it in HI (or simply press and hold >1s the first time). If wings folded (not locked unfolded) you can toggle NWS HI with a second tap. NWS is disengaged by launch bar is extended (NWS low available on control held).
fitness88 Posted June 6, 2018 Posted June 6, 2018 (edited) I found this command for NWS disengage, why is it mapped with the autopilot and I don't think this works for A/P as I tried it. "A" Autopilot/Nosewheel Steering Disengage (Paddle) Switch Stick; HOTAS edit: "A" disengages A/P Edited June 6, 2018 by fitness88

If the Carrier ingame goes too fast so taxiing in it can be a real problem because it than feels like taxiing on a greasy surface rather than having proper grip below the tires. But you solved it, so have fun now. BlackSharkDen | BSD Discord | DCS Tutorial Collection
majapahit Posted June 6, 2018 Posted June 6, 2018 (edited) I found this command for NWS disengage, why is it mapped with the autopilot and I don't think this works for A/P as I tried it. "A" Autopilot/Nosewheel Steering Disengage (Paddle) Switch Stick; HOTAS edit: "A" disengages A/P For NWS HI there are two commands to consider, that are combined with the same switch(es), autopilot engage/ON ("A", the stage before the mode select) when in the air, and “S” Undesignate Target Rader Lock when in the air, and Nose Wheel Steer Switch when rolling, which engages HI when held (and just tap for short radius burst when in taxi). "A" Autopilot/Nosewheel Steering Disengage (Paddle) Switch /Stick; HOTAS "S" Undesignate (in air radar target unlock)/ Nose Wheel Steer Switch (hold/tap for HI on the deck) / bound to the bottom of the Stick; HOTAS, next to the above mentioned Paddle) When NWS on the deck, where NWS shows on the HUD when engaged ("A" disengages and you'll roll on your engine and your rudder), you 'tap' or 'tap long' (HOLD) the NWS stick button for HI sharp radius corner, do Not have Maxed rudder steering, for the HI state will then not be engaged, you should have 'some' nosewheel rudder left or right, then tap or tap-hold the NWS pinky switch which will then shorten your turn radius for the duration of the HI Hold tap. At landing the NWS automatically comes on when wheels are weighed and this shows in the HUD. What I do on airfields I Disengage NWS with “S” when in line with runway and steer with aircraft speed momentum and rudder, and tap switch to engage NWS back on again with "S" when below 70-50 knots (like a civil aircraft or the Warthog A10) until the taxi speed crawl and then as needed to maneuver to exit, tap "S" or tap-hold to tap HI state as necessity demands, NOT at maxed rudder for HI won't engage. NWS HI will show in the HUD.
