Chops Posted June 27, 2018 Posted June 27, 2018 Is a Corsair CS650M (650 w) Power Supply adequate to run a 1080 ti graphics card? The Nvidia specs. show that a 650 w. power supply will power the 1080 ti, however, I am wondering what your practical experience is with this hardware in DCS.
Demon_ Posted June 27, 2018 Posted June 27, 2018 (edited) What is the CPU? What model of video card? How old is the power supply? Edited June 27, 2018 by Demon_ Attache ta tuque avec d'la broche.
Demon_ Posted June 27, 2018 Posted June 27, 2018 (edited) Corsair CS (made by CWT) are one step higher than the CX (Tier 3). Good for desktop, but "not the best" for gaming PC. What is the difference? Desktop (good, average) psu has a lot of ripple on the 12v supply that will reduce the life of the video card. 650w is enough, no problem on that side. Use it, but clear the dust. CS650N (still solid unit) is a tier 3, next time look for a tier 2. Edited June 28, 2018 by Demon_ Attache ta tuque avec d'la broche.
Chops Posted June 27, 2018 Author Posted June 27, 2018 What is the CPU? What model of video card? How old is the power supply? I have an MSI Raider X99A motherboard, with an Intel i7 5820K 3.3 GHz 15M LGA 2011 CPU. The Corsair 650 w. power supply is about 2.5 yrs old. I am considering purchasing the MSI GTX 1080 ti Gaming graphics card.
Demon_ Posted June 28, 2018 Posted June 28, 2018 (edited) It's a 140w CPU. Considering a better/bigger PSU. Tier 1 or 2 or 2b in the lists. I'm not an expert, it's only my recommendation. https://www.thetechgame.com/Archives/t=5613293/power-supply-guide-the-good-and-the-bad.html http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?108088-Official-XS-Power-Supply-Ranking-Phase-I Edited June 28, 2018 by Demon_ Attache ta tuque avec d'la broche.
BitMaster Posted June 28, 2018 Posted June 28, 2018 If you cut corners with a PSU you shoot your own foot, lemme tell you this. In almost 20 years PC service this remains the #1 part that needs replacement. You can buy a "Walmart" of the shelf PC and use it 10 years, like Grandma does, but if you "misuse" it for heavy gaming after putting in a bigger card etc.. you will learn that some stuff just isnt made for the usage you force onto it. Get a decent PowerSupply and EXCLUDE that as your primary instability source. And...when it comes to PSU's..listen to Demon !!!! cichlidfan Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 The PSU is the heart of the PC, no matter what you might have thought. Never, ever, ever skimp on the PSU. Tailhook Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 No, find a 750 or 800 watt gold rated, minimum. I would go 850W gold (or higher) if you are or will be overclocking. Intel i9-13900K : ASUS TUF RTX 4080 : 32GB G.Skill RipjawsV 4000 : TM HOTAS Warthog : HP Reverb G2

gavagai Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 Seasonic Meh, the capacitor on my gold-rated Seasonic popped in less than 2 years. The velvet bag they shipped it with sure makes me feel special, though. A good PSU is important. I see that the 1080ti draws 250W, which makes it a monster. golani79 Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 I've made good experiences with enermax PSUs - currently running a Platimax in my computer. Although only 600W as I currently run a GTX 970 .. thinking of upgrading to 1080 as well but I've got time. Not sure though if it would be enough combined with an i7 6700k (not OCed) >> DCS liveries by golani79 <<
BitMaster Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 You guys shoud read some reviews before trying to save money on a PSU for a DCS gaming rig or hardcore game rig in general. I can only heartly suggest [H]ard|OCP and their review, true, brutal, down to the facts and no compromises. Their PSU reviews are among the best available on the net. http://www.hardocp.com Cheap PSU not only die faster, they run hotter, they have ripple noise and destroy all your goodies way way faster when driven into high load stress situations than a good PSU with very little ripple would do. OCP, overcurrentprotection, is another feature you should have, and really only Platinum label if you aim above 600watts. It matters if you need to dissapate 25w or 60w of waste heat, one can be passiv whereas #2 need a fan at 800rpm constant. Really, get a Seasonic and enjoy, or one of equal quality which is hard to find for the same money as most of them use Seasonic for their top tier lines. Corsair does not build PSU themselves, neither does Enermax nor beQuiet. There is Seasonic, SunFlower and afew names I dont remember from the server PSU labels, those do actually build PSU's. The names you all mentio relabel, that's it. Corsair is an excellent relabler LoL The only thing they actually produce is marketing. I also could bet 1 grand that 90% of all chassis commonly sold come out of three large companies, actually mainly 1 that supplies them all. When you se emany towers and cases, those folds and cuts, the tooling used..it very often looks very alike inside tho the outside is designed to the relabelers wishes. PSU's are no different. Actually imho the best and most affordable top tier PSU right now is this: https://www.hardocp.com/article/2018/06/14/seasonic_prime_1200w_platinum_power_supply_review/ If I had to rebuild, that or the 1kW sister would be it. 1kW is still plenty for 1 High End GPU and a CPU in all circumstances. They also have a Titanium grade, that's the top tier king if money is not a problem. Demon_ Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 Gav, bad luck! They use high quality 105°C Japanese caps: https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/power-supplies-101,4193-5.html "Seasonic manufacture their own PSUs. Long time PSU manufacturer, all of their products are very good, one of the few OEM's to still make quality low-mid power units. Seasonic units are generally quiet, high quality and good value." Many Corsair AX, HX, TX v2 are made by them. All XFX and many Antec too. On Asian/Europe side, PSU made by Super Flower are the best. Attache ta tuque avec d'la broche.
