PointCTRL - Finger Mounted VR Controller

Recommended Posts

Miles,

The manual states "The headset has five wide angle sensors that power Oculus Insight, which precisely tracks your environment and instantly translates movements into VR."

The cameras are used for 6DOF positional tracking for the headset.

Put a piece of paper/tape over that camera and report back if it still works.

New hotness: I7 9700k 4.8ghz, 32gb ddr4, 2080ti, :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, HP Reverb (formermly CV1)

Old-N-busted: i7 4720HQ ~3.5GHZ, +32GB DDR3 + Nvidia GTX980m (4GB VRAM) :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, Rift CV1 (yes really).

Thanks Fusedspine33,

If covering the sensor at all degrades tracking I should go ahead and make a specific PCB and enclosure for the S.

I will reach out to Oculus on it.

Thanks,

Hello everyone. The short video on how to calibrate the PointCTRL controllers are up on YouTube. It's a seven minute video with three points of view so you can see every aspect of the setup. Let me know what else you'd like to see. And again, thanks to Los, MilesD and mariner3302 for the input.

That was awesome Hansang,

Thank you so much, I truly appreciate you spending your time doing this for everyone. Your video really is a great supplement to the instructions, which you are also fixing up for us. This will make following the instructions so much easier because you presented the big picture in a very logical and concise way.

Thanks again Hansang, and because of your efforts, I can focus on getting the orders out.

Ok, so presumably we only need to do the set up procedure only once and not every time DCS is booted up?

That is correct. The calibration stays as set until a new calibration is completed.

I suggest that you do a complete and correct calibration first. Then use PointCTRL for a few days and get used to how and what it does for you. Then, if you wish, you can re-run calibration again to fine tune PointCTRL to your liking. Because I have a physical F-14B 'Pit, I moved my FCU settings closer in to account for the difference in size between the VR view and the 'Pit.

Yes as Mariner3302 said. And it goes a step further. When you *recalibrate* (like going from windowed to full screen mode), it remembers what you had set it for. Convenient if you want to just redo the L/R/T/B calibration for example.

Nice thoughtful touches go a long way to just enjoying the product.

Ok, cheers for that, chaps, that was helpful again.

Now (thinking out loud) my only problem is which new vr headset to get! Should I wait for the Index or reverb or just get the Rift S? Hmm, by getting the Rift S I’m gonna have to wait even longer until Miles redesigns the HMS mount. Ooooh, these first world problems!!

Miles,

Have you considered releasing the CAD files for the 3D printed parts of PointCtrl? Open source for these items could lead to designs for "not standard" VR headsets. I have modified my CV1 headset with a PS4 headset band to relieve the CV1 headset pressing on my face. Makes a world of difference to me. However I have a 3D printed bracket just were PointCtrl will mount. I don't think it will be a problem, but it got me thinking.

Hi Farmertom,

That is one interesting looking set-up. I love it. Without thinking it through, I am inclined to say yes, and I think its a good idea. This project has been driven by the community, so releasing the files fits with what we are doing. Any concerns or suggestions on this subject would be appreciated.

"You are correct Sir" as Ed McMahon would say to Johnny Carson. (FOG reference)

I don't know if I made it clear, The HMS will cycle through your current settings and the 3 presets,.

In other words when you enter the calibration mode, the "waterfall" as Mariner3302 calls it, is your currently set cursor limits. You can then press the right button again to make fine adjustments to those settings. When you press the left button you cycle through the center, stretched, conventional monitor, and then back to your current cursor limits. At any time, if you get confused, just press the white reset button on the HMS and you will revert back to your previously saved settings.

Thanks Hansang

But is sure looks like the generic mount (basically a 90deg mount) will fit that perfectly. What's the width of your blue mount?

The blue mount is 1.5 inches wide. Wasn't sure that the PointCtrl mount would work, but thought it would. it just got me thinking.

You should be golden. The generic mount is 1.5 inches wide. See the picture of it against a 1-2-3 block.

Consulting with Los on Vive HMS enclosure after diner and Mojitos with the wives.

Just Killing time here waiting for the latest video to upload to YouTube. While not up to Hansang's standards, it demonstrates the important step of conducting an Infra Red Light survey of your room. This would have saved Mariner3302 some time with his bright South Carolina sun.

Thanks,

Miles

Miles and group,

I finally got to get it all set up and covered the top camera, I didn't see any degradation of head tracking or contact with the new hand controllers. There is a reason the camera is there, but it isn't readily apparent.

The clarity and lack of SDE are amazing, It may not have the specs of the O+ or Pimax, but it has none of the headaches getting it to run and it just looks great, well worth the upgrade to me.

Can't wait to try it with PointCtrl.

Hey Fusedspine,

Thank you so much for checking. I thought the upward facing camera was probably primarily for tracking the control above your head when they are out of the FOV of the other cameras. I also suspected it was not used for the head tracking, because 99% of the time it would only see a white ceiling without any discernible features to identify and track. Unfortunately, I don't think my melon head and wide IPD will work with the S. The reverb is supposed to have a bigger sweet spot,

Thanks Again,

Miles

New VR Pointing Device

Miles, does this mean you’re not going to make a mount for the Rift S? I just got mine.

I know the top camera is not readily apparent, but to be honest I’d feel a lot better having a mount that doesn’t block the camera.

That said, for all I know it might not matter when stationary and only comes into play with the Guadrian boundaries.

I've got my Rift S, too and I would't like to cover the top inside-out-tracking camera, because some times I play VR games. Maybe somethig to put it on the front? Valve Index has also the port in front. Some velcro strap would do the job for me.

The Forum has spoken, If that's what you guys want, that's what I will make, and it makes sense. I have some thoughts on it and will post some 3D models for your feedback. I know the 3D printed ABS enclosures don't look the best, but they are great for these quick mods.

Thanks for your input.

Would a thick piece of foam stuck to the front of the S bring the HMS out far enough to not block the camera?

Yes, good point, that would work fine in the interim, and probably long term. The generic mount comes with EVA foam, sheet ABS plastic, and extra double faced tape, just for this purpose.

I rather make a dedicated final solution to keep the HMS as unobtrusive as possible. At a minimum I will have a mount that does just what you described with the current PCB. Then probably a dedicated PCB solution with an offset sensor.
