You could do that, and it would not make much of a deference in FCU tracking. Using the current PCB for the S will probably allow fitting without an included spacer(will block top camera) or with included spacer (will not block the top camera). I am sure we will acquire the info on the what specific functions the top cameras data is read for.

Just Killing time here waiting for the latest video to upload to YouTube. While not up to Hansang's standards, it demonstrates the important step of conducting an Infra Red Light survey of your room. This would have saved Mariner3302 some time with his bright South Carolina sun.

Ahhh yes, the old "Smoking Jackets". To this day, Carol still talks about them, She always wore mine around the house when we were dating back in the early 80's. I have to find one for her again.

 

Back OT: Updating the firmware with the zoom function, Does [right ALT] + keyboard zero[0] work for V/R zoom for everyone. Right now I have to hard code it into the HMS.

 

The zoom function will enable users to zoom in by moving the FCU closer to the HMS, and then zoom out by moving it away again. While PointCTRL is very functional, the zoom was really the only thing I found cool about using it. (Man, I really suck at marketing.)

This is a little tricky as the unit has curves all over, best I could determine is as follows:

 

Width = Widest point is 75mm (70mm top and bottom)

Height = 95mm (Taken at the centre highest point, but again tapering to 94 at the far left/right)

Depth = 74mm to the very edge. 72 to the end of the main "grey" section, the black end cap type cover adds another 2mm

 

Hope that helps. Other less useless DIY's please feel free to correct my ad-hoc attempts at precision!

That width measurement seems a bit narrow? Of course if you didn't abandon your British Imperial System in 60's for the metric system you wouldn't have this problem of tiny marks to close together on your measuring device.

That binding works for me.

Curious, did you try anything with the knee board or flashlight or night vision on/off?

Agreed zoom is most useful, but those were others I thought might work well.

Us British like to keep things simple...I simply missed off the 1 from that particular measurement...ooops! It should have read

Life has been a "little" fraught recently as we are trying to move house. I can see why it comes in at no.2 on life's "stress-o-meter"!!!

 

Despite that and work being busy, I have continued to keep a watching brief on your antics!

 

It really is looking superb and every time I get in the sim I long for the day I can keep the rift controllers in the draw and do what my fingers were made for...well you know what I mean!

You always have good thoughts on this. I did not think about adding other functions to the zoom like you mention. My thought on the Night Vision would be the APB (Aux Push Buttons) (name from Ratcatcher) which the HMS is already set up for with connectors. The VRB's (Virtual Radial Buttons) (name from JoeS) are still in the works with proof of concept done. It will add 16 hot-spots around and just outside the FOV that can be assigned any function you like. Each hot-spot can also have 3 separate functions, FCU BTNS 1,2, or 3 foe a total of 48 logically positioned virtual pushbuttons just off screen.

 

Back to what you were talking about,

 

Press FCU BTN 1 while cursor is not on a switch, bring cursor close to face to turn on flashlight, ,night vision, oor other function.

Great Idea, I like it. I will just have to confirm that it does not interfere with other functions. Your idea can be implemented on the HMS, which we can update VIA firmware, I believe Mariner has already updated his with suggestions that he, Hansang, and Los made.

I wont work on it now because I am focused on production, but it will be a definite option in the near future.

Yes, Miles can push through a firmware update to make any software changes if needed for the HMS.

The firmware update I did went slicker than snot. Very easy!

Does the new firmware cancel the previous calibration? Also can different profiles be saved, in say My Documents?

I didn't have to recalibrate after the update. There are no user files. Its internal. So if someone else used PC, it is possible they may want to calibrate it to their needs. You will find calibration isn't that big of a deal and is easy. PC is pretty simple in its use so try not to overthink it.

Just as Mariner said, update does not affect calibration and everything is stored in the HMS. When I get around to the GUI you will be able to manage different profiles.

Rift S, Low Protrusion, Camera Blocking Mount.

Here is the first go at the the Rift S mount. This one will block the upper camera but is unobtrusive. I was not happy with how far foward the HMS had to be to clear the top camera. Still working thru a few options.

Miles, your on fire! Looking good. I just wish I was closer to you and I would happily have tried it!

 

On a slight side note (sorry for the OT), if anyone is on the fence about the Rift S, I've found it to be a very worthwhile upgrade from the CV1. It certainly isn't perfect but a considerable step in the right direction.

 

I think to begin with I had set my expectations way too high and was expecting everything would be pin sharp. I could see the improvements but wasn't blown away. I then fired up my CV1 again and WOW, suddenly having a direct "before and after" comparison made it very clear (no pun intended). The S is truly superior and more defined, both inside and out of the cockpit. I've had no issues with inside out tracking either.

Yeah, I got an S yesterday and agree. And I even find the sound very acceptable too.

 

Just thinking Miles, an idea to completely remove the possibility of top mounted camera obstruction may be to redesign a mount for the HMS to fit fully onto the front face of the HMD without it being a corner piece (although I don’t know how the electrics are positioned inside the casing. This could maybe work for all HMDs i suppose too. Something maybe to think aboutif you decide on future a v2 version.

 

Or maybe you’ve already thought of that and it doesn’t work! Lol
