Maverick87Shaka Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 (edited) Hi to all, The question is simple, can a player with an high ping affect all the server performance and stability? Just today a player reported that it's run smooth for a while, and start to have some lags with return to spectator, can't select slot etc. on connecting player with ping more than 150ms. Could be the client ping a matter for DCS? Based on your experience, witch is a "safe" max ping to set up? Thanks! Edited September 12, 2018 by Maverick87Shaka FlighRIG => CPU: RyZen 5900x | RAM: 64GB Corsair 3000Mhz | GPU: nVIDIA RTX 4090 FE | OS Storage: SSD NVMe Samsung 850 Pro 512GB, DCS Storage: SSD NVMe Sabrent 1TB | Device: Multipurpose-UFC, VirPil T-50, TM WARTHOG Throttle, TrackHat, MFD Cougar with screen. DefaultFace Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 Everyone I know who has any experience running servers in DCS, as well as what I've observed on MP it is definitely an issue. About 150-200 Ping is more or less where issues start to happen. 9./JG27 "If you can't hit anything, it's because you suck. If you get shot down, it's because you suck. About 150-200 Ping is more or less where issues start to happen. We're now trying with 110 ms as ping limit and check server behavior. The plan is use this settings for a week and check if there is some benefits in terms of stability. Emmy Posted September 13, 2018 Posted September 13, 2018 I'm routinely between 160-190ms from Arizina to our servers in Belgium and I've never crashed out. Yet... 104th_Maverick Posted September 13, 2018 Posted September 13, 2018 Yes they can. But 150-250 is well within range for DCS. The problem starts when clients who have pings of above 250 start to join the server. Now it is not gospel that as soon as this happens DCS will crash. Some people have high pings for different reasons, the ones that cause the problems are people who are geographically far away from the server and have lots of hops to make it to the server or suffer from lots of packet loss enroute. DCS does not deal with this very well and it causes massive stability problems with your mission and server. We run a very strict ping limit of 250 on our server. Alpenwolf Posted September 14, 2018 Posted September 14, 2018 I had a max ping of 350 on my server. Now I have a max ping of 300, but surely will reduce that to 250, after some players have reported to me already about some lags and bad server performance, due to players joining the server with higher pings. HiJack Posted September 15, 2018 Posted September 15, 2018 This have always been a problem with DCS and there is no other cure than to limit the server maximum ping settings. It also depends a bit on mission size and number of moving AI ground units.

Oh please do not do it :(. Your server is one of the few I fly (and still can due to this ping-barring elsewhere) and this would literally kill DCS MP for me.
Alpenwolf Posted September 15, 2018 Posted September 15, 2018 ... It also depends a bit on mission size and number of moving AI ground units. I thought the number of moving AI units is not an issue any more. As to the size, well... size matters. You know what I mean :smilewink: Oh please do not do it :(. Drona Posted September 15, 2018 Posted September 15, 2018 If this is going to be the "future" and every server owner starts running ping limits, then DCS clients will be limited to a few servers which are geographically close to them. This is a detriment to the multiplayer community. Hope ED can do something about it, I know its not easy, but one can hope!
-Martin- Posted September 15, 2018 Posted September 15, 2018 What's your average ping? I just played your server for at least an hour. I had my ping around 290. Many people were on the server, no issues or crashes. I understand that the server needs to run well, but as I cannot influence where I live I hope that performance issues could be addressed by the ED rather than by ping limits.
Maverick87Shaka Posted September 17, 2018 Author Posted September 17, 2018 After a week running on strict ping limit of 100ms, we notice that the server still have some crash and strange behavior ( lags ) So is not the ping ( or not only that ) our problem, problably the number of total player can be the source of problem. New ping limit on our server will be 250 ms. Should be a fine value to guarantee stability and fun for almost everyone. I'm sorry for all distant player that will can't join us. Thanks to all for report your experience.
