Was just thinking of picking up the Huey (wish the gazelle was on a better deal) but anyway just started thinking, when would you really use the Huey over the 8? Its bigger, more weapons, and sling load, just an interesting dilema sort of thing?

I think the Huey is a lot easier to fly than the Mi-8. Also, despite carrying much less in terms of rockets, I find its door gunners are very effective in attacking weakly defended targets. Quite frankly, neither of the two survives long near targets that have proper air defences, so the 'superior weapons' of the Mi-8 quite often just end up being simply more rockets lobbed semi-aimed towards a semi-visible target.

In short I prefer fighting in the Huey and hauling in the Eight.

Whilst the Mi-8 has more capability MTOW etc the Huey is also a capable gun ship but for slightly different rolls.

You really can't go wrong with either Mi-8 or Huey.

You do realise if they are both 50% off then buying both will only cost the price of one,.. sort of. :music_whistling:

Yeah I thought you already had the Gazelle I see it's only slightly discounted.

Control is an illusion which usually shatters at the least expected moment.

Gazelle Mini-gun version is endorphins with rotors. See above.

Currently rolling with a Asus Z390 Prime, 9600K, 32GB RAM, SSD, 2080Ti and Windows 10Pro, Rift CV1. bu0836x and Scratch Built Pedals, Collective and Cyclic.

no I have the 8 and the 50, I was getting the gazelle your right, just when I was gonna get it that day I needed a new engine in the car, well re build it anyway, so playthings had to wait, now its the sale just thinking of adding the huey, love the 8 to bits, it is a shame the gazelle isn't as discounted as itl be a completely different bird from the other two really.

I probably get the huey anyway its dirt cheap, but I did just think the 8 is a big huey, but if I get half as much fun from it as I do the 8 itl be totally worthwhile

I believe that Kang is right on the money when it comes to flying against a well defended target with proper air defences but I have to disagree with his opinion about the Huey being a lot easier to fly. I feel that the Mi-8, with it's AFCS, is much more stable in a hover and actually "feels" more like flying a helicopter than the Huey. But that is just my opinion. The Mi-8 is much faster and carries a bigger load but the door gunners really SUCK!! :joystick:

The UH-1 is less stable and required much more constant input than the Mi-8. If you get it trimmed out just so, it will fly straight and levelish for awhile, but basically it takes more hands-on. However you can throw it into more aggressive maneuvers with less trouble than the Mi-8.

And if you want ez-mode, with the Huey you can let the AI do all your gunning, including the forward-facing guns. Still, the Mi-8 is more relaxing to fly.

Rotaries should never be relaxing to fly! :)

I love the Huey because it's iconic. And it "feels" more like you're flying it than controlling it. Especially true in VR.

Wowa! I find all rotaries very relaxing to fly. I'm doing it all wrong then?.. :P :D

I love them both.

I got started first on the Huey. Took tens? dozens? of hours to get comfortable on this ride. Then transitioned to the Mi-8. Much quicker, but not because it was easier, but because I already had the previous experience. In fact, despite it's stability system, I think the Mi-8 is a lot more difficult to do the tough things in --- hover, sling loads etc. The Huey is much more easier to control when it comes to the challenging stuff like this. This is almost certainly due to its relatively lighter weight. Level flight is the same in both.

I will say that I now end up with the Mi-8 more for five reasons:

(1) The Huey just seems out of place in the Caucasus or the PG, while the Mi-8 fits right in. In fact, the Mi-8 fits right in everywhere.

(2) I've never flow a real helicopter. But if I can talk about the "feels", I have to say the Mi-8 "feels" better. it has inertia. A heavy bird. For heavy work. And I like that feel.

(3) Gunship mode is awesome. So much more fun in Huey just for the sheer amount of firepower. And a whole lot more difficult to put rounds on target.

(4) The campaign(s). These are awesome as well. Really, really, really, really, really immersive. Well written and great storyline.

(5) The Mi-24 is coming. The Mi-24 and the Mi-8 are like the Ghost and the Darkness, Bonnie and Clyde, Thelma and Louise. [yes, I know that the Cobra is also in the pipeline ... but that seems even further off].

Also note: the Mi-8 is just as iconic as the Huey. Perhaps more so, to more people, over a greater period of time, and in many more different ways. The (Soviet) Afghan war, of course. But also the numerous bush wars in Africa. And still in action/service today in one form or another in large numbers around the world.

I still hop in the Huey now and then. And when I do, I definitely crank up CCR.
