hi folks. wanted to quickly run this by you fine people to see if this seems correct. i'm flying my beloved F/A-18 on a sunny day in the Caucasus:

straight and level

8000' msl

no wind

2 mk83 bombs on pylons

8000 lbs of fuel

ol girl got up to:

military power - mach 1.02

afterburners - mach 1.41 (902 kt groundspeed)

just seemed pretty quick for the altitude and loadout. wanted to see if there was something wrong or if this was the usual speeds

With certain losdouts she’s certainly a bit quicker than I’d expect. I mean we know stores drag is WIP at the moment so maybe that’s a factor? Let it stabilise and then do an emergency jettison to get rid of the stores and see what happens. Might even slow down! I know the double racks for the bombs have negative drag currently as it goes faster with them than without them lol.

ahh. yes i had 8 MK83s originally, but had dropped 6 of them, with 2 left on the pylons when i noticed i was whipping it really fast. i've been flying this for a while and never have been able to get to these speeds at 8000 feet WITH some external stores

There you have it. Some racks when empty actually make the jet go faster at the moment, including the BRU-33 used here. Try this with 4x 6 BDU-33 training bombs and 2 Mk. 82, drop them all but leave the racks on and have some fun if you feel the need... rdlaugh.png

The need to defy the laws of physics! :megalol:

I wonder though.. Could you somehow load a BRU-33 onto the bottom of another BRU-33.... and then maybe a few more... You seeing where I'm going with this? So much negative drag that it can keep up with a SR-71

edit the .lua and put those big racks on ever hard point and on the wing tip rails. LOL!!!

Well, I once experimented around a bit with that FA-18C.lua with some understanding of what's defined there... The result was beyond insanity. Above somewhere around 520kts the thing accelerated even at idle throttle and it was just possible to reduce speed by putting out airbrakes or even gear (MLG would stay in though). Top speed I could achieve that way was somewhere around M 4.7ish, calculated from the ground speed shown on the HSI page. Had to use airbrake to stop it from going faster - but I tried nevertheless and shortly past that the jet just exploded after engine failure (103+% N2, N1 somewhere in the 60s, EGT over 900). That really was a very interesting experience to make and I'm totally glad this is being catched by the IC. Wouldn't want to meet that onliine...

Holy cow. How high could you get like that? I bet the view from the top of the parabola would be stunning in VR lol.
