Logitech X56 slop in center of stick

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Just "upgraded" from an X55 to an X56. I wanted the extra mini stick axis on the stick for A10C CMS and F/A-18C Wpn Select (works great).

However, the darn stick has a ton of slop in the center, before the spring provides any tension. It's almost like the sleeve that goes over the shaft and holds the spring in place is too large for the shaft, so no matter what spring tension I use, it has play right in the center. It's fine for most things, but when precision is required (A10C AAR in particular), the slop is just enough to make the necessary fine movements nigh impossible.

I've set some small deadzones, but if I go large enough on the deadzone to completely cancel out the slop, it still hurts precision due to the deadzone.

I've read on reddit that this is really common with the new X56, so I'm not sure RMAing it will even get me a new one that doesn't have the same problem.

Has anyone managed to macgiver something to tighten up the stick? Any ideas to share?

Nobody?

This is getting more and more infuriating. I have to use a deadzone of 4 to cancel out the slop, and it makes very precise movements difficult. I owned 2 different X55s, neither of which had this problem.

I'm considering RMAing it, but I wonder if I'll just end up with more of the same...

Yes, I just purchased the X-56 last month and the stick needed a bit of a deadzone (I came from the X-55 as well)...though 4 isn't much of a dead zone in my opinion. I actually purchased the Warthog stick only and use it with the X-56 throttle as I much prefer the throttle over the Warthog throttle (which I tried). There's no fixing the center slop on the X-56 stick as far as I'm aware.

Related question for you: on your X-56 throttle, do all the buttons and hats 'click' or have a definite press and release?

On my throttle, one of the 4-hat buttons (the 'up' button) works digitally in the software, but it doesn't physically click and release.

Nope, they don’t all click. Just pressure on the two thumb hats is usually enough, they move but don’t click.

I said it in another post but I have a X-55 and would not recommend it. After few months of useage the joystick the joystick buttons stopped working, only way to get them to work is to hit the top of the stick and comes and goes. Springs could be better since there is also slop before you bank left or right.

From all the reading I have done X56 is not better than the X55 they use the same cheap chinese parts.

As for support its a joke. I will never purchase a Logitech joystick again. My advice is return it. There should be no slop.

Sorry to hear of continuing problems with Saitek . I purchased a new X52 pro during the MadCatz era , and it left such a bad impression i shall never purchase another Saitek product . I did hope for a better result from Logitech though . (Sigh) If only CH would introduce a dual hotas throttle :(

I used 2 X55s and loved them. If you spend a half hour and crack open the throttle to tape up the wiring (before it becomes a problem), they last. I used each one for over 2 years.

They do have some well documented issues, but there are fixes for all of them. Aside from this there are obviously one off problems, as with any other product.

The warthog has issues too (just look at all the frustration about the TDC controller for the Hornet), and it costs twice as much. For what you get in terms of button selection and software control, the X55/X56 is a great setup for the price. Try one out before you bash it.

But back to the point of my post, my X55s did not have this slop in the middle. Everything else about my new X56 (it’s the new grey Logitech model) has been great.

Bummer. Design flaw, I guess. My X-55 hats and buttons all clicked great and never failed.

I would RMA it, paying a lot of money for something that is not 100% working would not be something I would want to do

Be sure and use a powered USB hub with the X56. Many ghosting issue/s are tied to USB power issues when trying to use the stick/throttle with ports on the motherboard or front panel.

Mine is exactly the same way.

The problem is poorly designed spring seat. Tolerances are far to large between the spring seat and the center shaft.

For the price these things cost, poor design like this should never happen. It's not Rocket science.

This is a little video of the movement in the seat.

I'm going to try something to fix it.

that is broken,, no way a stock spring will ever be that sloppy. Look for a new spring.:joystick:

It’s not the spring itself, but rather the gimbal that holds the spring. The manufacturing tolerances are too loose.

It’s unfortunate, because my old X55 was very tight and had no slop. I love everything else about my new X56 though. 2 steps forward, one step back...

Ended up buying the X56 and you can see in the video below the stick does not want to center because the amount of slop in the center.

Brand new joystick, might not look like much, but when your trying to fly a precise heading even on AP like with the A10, Viggen, F-14, any of the SUs, it won't hold the heading because the joystick at lease for me won't center. Ridiculousness of you ask me.

When I first plugged in the X-56 [grey] the stick was off center a bit...re-calibrated and never had the problem again.

The stick is amazingly smooth on motion throughout the axis and the 16 bit sensor is so accurate in my movement.

Lots of controls. Not sure what the SLD is all about, it's not a slider, except it has a hold.

The one thing that bothers me is the placement of the nub stick on the j-stick.

Yeah, I largely fixed it with the software recalibration as well.

I still need a deadzone in game of 2, which really isn't that bad. Before I software recalibrated, I needed a DZ of 4, so it made a big difference.

The challenge for me is the slop is coming from the joystick itself and won't properly center.

I have recalibrated and the video shows the result.

Can someone with an X-56 [grey] please explain the throttle tension. I'm using it at the lowest tension,

there is a range of loose turns then you hit some resistance should I try to turn past the resistance for more adjusting range or is that the stop point?

It's incredibly smooth almost like hydraulic fluid, but if you don't move the throttle for a bit it will feel like molasses. But in reality I can still move it when it's tight like that faster than the spool time so I don't really need to move the throttle too fast.

Yes, you can keep going once it gets harder to turn, that’s when it actually starts to apply tension. Be careful trying to go too loose though, as it will cause the screw inside that holds it on to come off and you will lose tension control. Easily fixed by opening it up but a pain nonetheless.

Thanks for the reply. I was referring more to loosening it only...it sure doesn't need any tightening.

Yeah, be careful then. Don’t go much past where the knob feels loose

I just have a few millimetres of looseness, barely noticeable but if you find a fix please post back. It's really a great HOTAS!

Do you think the thick grease used on the throttle would help. I find the throttle is really smooth but needs constant movement to keep it from being too slow.
