Looking to get into VR for the first time, but in a quandry over what to get.

Limiting factor is likely to be current graphics card- RTX 2070 - so I guess that rules out HP Reverb for now ?

Samsung O+ looked interesting but for some unfathomable reason Samsung don't sell them this side of the Atlantic :( Sooo..... Rift S or are there better choices ? ( don't particularly want to mess about with external sensors, will mostly be seated running DCS, and Vive Pro too darn expensive)

I would say maybe Rift S or Odyssey plus based on what you have described.

Odyssey Plus seems to take a fair amount of tinkering to get working properly, but usually those that do are pretty happy with it.

Rift S being Oculus and using their own software, will likely be pretty plug and play I would think.

Well, no one really knows yet how the HP reverb will work. Their minimum spec is listed as 1070 IIRC. And really a 2070 is about 10-15% lower in terms frames from a 2080. It "might" work, it "might not". Other than that, yeah, oddesey+ or Vive pro if you want better res. You might also wait to see what happens with the Vive Cosmos, that might be another 2160 unit. Honestly I'd wait to see how it all shakes out in a few months.

One thing I did wonder - if desktop monitors can run at resolutions lower than their native setting, can a VR headset likewise be run at a lower resolution ?

( just in case the latest superhires helmet struggles with frame rate - is it an expensive paperweight, or can it be run at suboptimal resolutions until such time as the PC has been sufficiently upgraded ? )

Question in my mind is whether or not we can even do that.

Most headsets come with 90hz monitors, for various reasons. To achieve that, both the CPU and GPU have to do their work in about 11ms. Very difficult in DCS.

At the other end of the scale, you need to keep your latency at about 20ms or less to avoid the puke factor. So what you're really shooting for is 45fps, hoping your GPU can take on its share of things like vis range and shadows, do whatever anti-aliasing you want, and turn on all those pixels in less than 22.2ms. It's harder than it sounds.

I know you can sort of do that with pimax. But you just loose FOV. No other headset can do it that ive heard of.

I recently upgraded my 1070 strix with a MSI 2070 gaming z. What I can say is that my Rift CV1 was good with my ex-1070 and is of course good with the 2070: I raised PD from 1 to 1.2 without loosing fps. So I think a Rift s or a Vive pro is surely good with a 2070 in DCS. I do not know about higher resolution HMDs.

P.S. maybe you can run a pimax with lower-than-native resolution, but is this worth it? I do not think so... we'll have variable foveated rendering and eye tracking in the near future, IMHO it's better to save money now for when we'll have a real 2nd generation HMD.

That does not mean do not buy a VR headset: flying in VR is a game changer right now. Just buy a cheaper HMD.

Yes, on SteamVR you can change that easily, even if the game doesn't support it directly.

That's what I did for runing Fallout 4 VR smooth on my Rfit.

Thanks, good to know there is a "get out of jail free" card if one's choice of headset turns out to be over-ambitious :)

Took the plunge with a Lenovo Explorer WMR headset.

First impressions of DCS VR: WOW !!

Soo much better than was expecting.

Not sure sticking my head through the F-18 canopy and peering over the side is realistic,

but it sure is fun :)

One question I have to ask though - why does everything seem half-sized? Makes me feel like I'm a blinkin hobbit !!

You can adjust the DCS "IPD" setting in the VR menu . This will scale everything to your satisfaction . Welcome to VR !

Can you screenshot your graphics settings page? I'm getting awful performance out of my DCS setup.
