beatlejohn Posted March 26, 2019 Posted March 26, 2019 Hey guys. I'm new to DCS and have been doing some of the training missions with the tomcat. I can take off and fly around ok but cant land yet lol. I have been trying to do that air to air guns tutorial... it says hit space bar to unpause and engage the enemy in front of u. I just cant find him at all! I hit F10 on the map and i see where he is. i follow my rio's instructions where he is and i just cant see him at all. Am i missing something here? Love the plane btw its awesome.
Rudel_chw Posted March 26, 2019 Posted March 26, 2019 On the options menu, enable labels .. use them until you are more used to spotting on dcs. StandingCow Posted March 26, 2019 Posted March 26, 2019 Lots of people (myself included) have trouble spotting planes in DCS, labels are helpful but you don't want to depend on them for when/if you eventually make the move to multiplayer. What resolution monitor do you play on? The higher the res the harder it is to spot stuff. 5900X - 32 GB 3600 RAM - 1080TI My Twitch Channel ~Moo
beatlejohn Posted March 26, 2019 Author Posted March 26, 2019 Thanks for the replies guys. I have labels enabled in the settings but it doesnt show up the target in the training mission. It does work if i go into an instant mission i can see the labels. But with this training mission it doesnt and i cant spot him. Maybe its a beta thing? i am using beta at the moment because i want to fly the tomcat. Ive only been using DCS since friday so i'll get the hang of it eventually :)

On dcs menu, click on mission editor and use it to open the training mission, then on the left side menu one of the top icons lets you check the mission options .. there you can change the option to allow labels on the mission. Probably you wont be able to save the edit, but you can then run the mission by clicking on the left green icon and it will now allow the labels. Other factors influence it, it's true, but to somebody new, cultivating situational awareness is pretty difficult. I'd suggest practicing mock/no kill dogfights with a friend (or on the aerobatics server), or create a custom mission with only friendly AI. Labels will help, but you'll also be training yourself to look for the labels instead of the airplanes. A lot of the complaints come from people who already developed such bad habits. A common mistake made by new pilots is 'looking' ''too hard''. Don't try so hard to locate and focus on blips, use a more 'peripheral vision' approach looking for movement that's out of place. Even a very small target is noticeable moving across the background. Dropping below your presumed target's altitude is also helpful as he'll be black against a white/blue sky Де вороги, знайдуться козаки їх перемогти. 5800x3d * 3090 * 64gb * Reverb G2

Labels dont show up at all in this training mission in the tomcat section. I also tried it again and i could clearly see my target at long range this time right from the start and had it locked on no probs. Every other time he just hasnt been visible at all. Could just be a bug in that mission. No big deal i wll carry on. Thanks everyone
