I think wheel lever was turned to "up"-position before takeoff. Wheels would come up when leaving the ground. If you have some "waves" on the RWY that swing up your plane for a sec. wheels would start going up but planes coming down again.

they probably picked it up put the gear back down and flew it the next day knowing Russian gear.

 

 

Why wait for the next day? :)

In all likelyhood, the handle was in the up position for a an immediate retractraction upon liftoff...the squat switch was disengaged for a second and the hydraulic pump started to lift the gear...too bad...
