Steering Dot lead angle

Hi Guys, can somebody explain to me why the Steering Dot does not show proper lead angle? All missiles pull quite some Gs when coming off the rail, especially when the target's flight path is perpendicular.

What am I missing?

Nothing I think is part of the missile modeling being incorrect.

If the target beams you on their 3/9 lines, then of course the missile will pull alot of G's because that is common sense. Can you post a track?

Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.

Not if the Steering Dot was centered and the target aircraft does not maneuver. Hence the point of the Steering Dot, to display perfect lead for the target aircraft so the missile comes straight off the rail and fly's dead ahead with perfect lead calculated prior to launch to the target. It may gain altitude to preserve kinetic energy but should not veer left or right.

Steering Dot lead angle

 

I believe the steering dot is intercept course for your aircraft, not your missiles. That's how it is in the M2000C as well.

 

 

 

But it is indeed directly related to the flashing SHOOT cue...

 

Either something is wrong with it... or there might be a more sophisticated explanation...

From my current understanding that dot is the ASC (or whatever its called in the 18 ) outside of missile range centering it will maximize the closer rate. When inside missile range centering the dot will show optimum steering to minimize the english bias command the missile will have to be given, minimizing energy loss to high g corrections.

I wanted to prove the point by doing tests with the F-15 and… I did not expect that.

 

 

I've set up a mission with a Tu-160 at Mach 2 and my flight path 90degrees to the Tu-160 at the same height. I was basically flying straight with the target on STT lock and waiting until the Steering Dot was centered. This I had to adapt with the F/A-18 a bit since the steering dot is just a tiny bit ahead of the target.

 

 

All shots were done with the Steering Dot centered and “Shoot” light active.

 

F-15: Steering Dot somewhat ok, but still behind (visible in the AIM-7MH shot)

 

  • AIM-120C_90deg: corrects to the left and goes straight after the target without lead, looks like it starts leading once pitbull
  • AIM-7MH_90deg: corrects to the right with correct lead to the target. Steering Dot does not show proper lead.

 

 

F/A-18: The Steering Dot is only a tiny bit ahead of the target. Very visible by the 90deg shot, I was very close to the target by the time the dot was in the center.

 

  • AIM-120C_45deg: correction to the right, does not have enough lead during flight
  • AIM-7MH_45deg: pulls extreme to the right, does not have enough lead during flight
  • AIM-7MH_90deg: hopeless shot

Really good stuff Snaproll. This topic seems to come up every 6 months or so. I really hate seeing a missile pull 10 Gs right off the rail. Nothing ever seems to be done about it unfortunately. Probably plays a role in why 120's arent reliable past 8-9 miles.

You cannot "move" that dot - it is calculated by the computer and should stay in the same position relative to the locked target (if it stays on straight track).

 

 

The "trick" is to put the dot inside of the range circle - but when the dot is calculted wrong by the computer there is nothing to be done by yourself...wait for ED

i noticed this. Compared to memories of the F-15 dot, the f-18's is way smaller and my eyeball calibration just says nope, it's not pulling any significant lead for a real intercept.

It's like <10 degrees, mostly floating around the circle.

It was Sierra's comment about centering the dot to take the shot :)… We know that. The problem is the dot seems wroing...
