razo+r Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 I've tested it only with those yet, but unguided rockets produce the same sonic boom sound effect like planes do in DCS, even when the rocket motor is off. I don't think that's correct, is it? Now launch a lot of them at once and you get a lot of sonic boom effects overlaid and repeated which does sounds really sh*tty.
ED Team btd Posted August 8, 2019 ED Team Posted August 8, 2019 (edited) And how often do you listen to rockets flying past your ears in real life? :D You probably heard a slightly different sound effect on a rocket than on an plane, isn't it? there are 2 different effects. here for comparison Edited August 8, 2019 by btd Best regards, Kanstantsin Kuzniatsou (btd) https://soundcloud.com/btd
QuiGon Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 I've tested it only with those yet, but unguided rockets produce the same sonic boom sound effect like planes do in DCS, even when the rocket motor is off. I don't think that's correct, is it? Why shouldn't it be correct? If the rocket is traveling at super sonic speed (even with it's motor off), then it will produce a sonic boom. Intel i7-12700K @ 8x5GHz+4x3.8GHz + 32 GB DDR5 RAM + Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080 (8 GB VRAM) + M.2 SSD + Windows 10 64Bit DCS Panavia Tornado (IDS) really needs to be a thing!
Tom Kazansky Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 I witnessed many times the effect of a riffle bullet passing. It is much much less than a plane. I assume the rocket's is closer to a bullet's than a plane's. but hey, we have a sim where we talk about this? cool how far we came from the 80s ;)

A different sound. But it still seems a bit off that a unguided rocket has such a big bang, or can that really be?
ED Team btd Posted August 8, 2019 ED Team Posted August 8, 2019 As QuiGon said, It’s not important what exactly flew by you. If it flew at supersonic speed, you should hear the effect of the sonic boom. In real life, it's pretty hard to hear a rocket or projectile flying past us. Most often, the sound of a sonic boom merges with the sound of a rocket or shell already exploding near us. Best regards, Kanstantsin Kuzniatsou (btd) https://soundcloud.com/btd
razo+r Posted August 8, 2019 Author Posted August 8, 2019 Yes, if an object goes supersonic, then it makes a boom, that's logical. But my point was, the volume of the boom from a "tiny" rocket is the same as a plane. Or that rocket sonic boom has the same volume like a Phoenix and it's sonic boom, which I don't think is 100% correct. But at least you guys cleared one point for me, so one is left (kind of).
ED Team btd Posted August 8, 2019 ED Team Posted August 8, 2019 Yes, the volume of the boom from the rocket is quieter than from the Fighter. As it is implemented in the DCS now. Less volume, less sound radius. Perhaps we need to lower the volume again from rockets and shells? May be. This is already easy tuning :) Best regards, Kanstantsin Kuzniatsou (btd) https://soundcloud.com/btd
