WelshZeCorgi Posted August 30, 2019 Posted August 30, 2019 What is the furthest contact you managed to pick up on the AWG-9? It says 195-200 miles away, depending on the size and profile of the aircraft, but I think I've only managed to pick up an IL-76 about 120 miles away, with fighters usually around 80 or less.
IronMike Posted September 1, 2019 Posted September 1, 2019 try pulse doppler search, this will give you a greater range. Ignition Posted September 3, 2019 Posted September 3, 2019 The problem with pd search is that it doesn't give you the range but you can see targets beyond 100nm
WelshZeCorgi Posted September 4, 2019 Author Posted September 4, 2019 Right, I forgot about the PD. The problem is I mostly played in Single player, only until last Sunday did I play RIO in multicrew and see how far it was capable of looking, though it doesn't put track files on the TID in this mode. I got the impression of radar range from the TID, and Jester doesn't report any contacts on the DDD in PD (does Jester even use PD search?), so I thought I wasn't finding anything beyond 120 miles.
r4y30n Posted September 4, 2019 Posted September 4, 2019 How would a RIO report a PD contact anyhow? Bogey 20 right, closing 600 kts, long range?
toilet2000 Posted September 4, 2019 Posted September 4, 2019 How would a RIO report a PD contact anyhow? Bogey 20 right, closing 600 kts, long range? I think that would be something like that, but telling his pilot this is a PD-only contact. The workflow for a RIO would be to stay in RWS, if there are no contacts, you switch to PD Search, if you pick up something, then you know it's extremely far out, since RWS doesn't show anything. Then it's a matter of juggling between PD and RWS until the target shows up. Once the target is close enough, you then switch to TWS and so on. I think it's possible to lock the target up to STT using the DDD in PD Search too, if you don't mind the reduced SA (or if the target is confirmed to be alone).

WelshZeCorgi Posted September 6, 2019 Author Posted September 6, 2019 STT lock.... How do you STT lock a pd search contact on the DDD? I tried but can't figure it out.
whiteladder Posted September 24, 2019 Posted September 24, 2019 I haven't tried against other large aircraft but I`m picking up a Bear in PD search at about 200 miles and getting a PD stt at about 190 miles
