reece146 Posted January 19, 2020 Posted January 19, 2020 I'm looking to buy a new video card. I'm currently running a used AMD RX580 in a used i7-3770K system. This was a Hackintosh build that I've overclocked to within an inch of it's life to run DCS, Assetto Corsa, and Projects Cars 2. In DCS I'm stuck in the 15-40 FPS range depending on what settings I run and in general the performance is "meh" at best. Frame rate really drops at low altitudes and landing can be a b!tch with the twitchy warbirds as a result. I've been back and forth between the two GPUs (RX 5700 XT and 2070 Super) but can't seem to make a decision. Both cards are within striking distance of each other in my local market - price doesn't matter that much. How does DCS run with the AMD card? Is it effectively same-same as the NVIDIA card or has DCS been so optimized for NVIDIA over the years that I'm better off going with the 2070S? I need to keep some form of AMD video card in the machine to run the CAD software I have on Mac OS (NVIDIA and Apple pissing match over the modern NV cards and drivers - don't ask). The mobo "should" be able to run both the RX580 and the 2070S if I go that way (but 8x PCIe v3 speeds). OR if I did the RX5700XT I'd only need the one card in the system and could retain 16x but there's really not that much difference between 8x and 16x it seems. For cards I'm eye the Sapphire NITRO+ RX 5700XT and the Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Windforce OC. Both will likely end up overclocked just 'cuz. Any insights? Thanks!
David OC Posted January 19, 2020 Posted January 19, 2020 I just posted about this in the DCS 2020 and Beyond PC Build! I play on a server with 1000s of units, some player controlled, that's the real test to check any system. Good to know bit. Is that on your 1440P screen? Just going off this post to get some idea for DCS. GTX 1080 Ti vs. RTX 2070 Super vs. 5700 XT: 39 Game Benchmark These cards seem to be all fairly close then and can hold 60 fps @ 1440P generally. Same discussions going on in many threads lol. We need to consolidate and sticky a thread. BitMaster Posted January 19, 2020 Posted January 19, 2020 no, that was 1080p but later today we will push it with my screen as we ran into an odd problem. His MSI Optix G24C display only runs FreeSync via the HDMI cable, at 120fps, with DP cable we get 144Hz but no FreeSync support. We will cross check the cables and monitors. Mine is 144Hz via DP ( only have DP ). I can connect my old Logitech Joystick and fly a bit on VA server, maybe that holds as MP ;) our FreeFlight was keyboard flight..LOL Time is limited, that's the only hurdle..LoL Gigabyte Aorus X570S Master - Ryzen 5900X - Gskill 64GB 3200/CL14@3600/CL14 - Sapphire Nitro+ 7800XT - 4x Samsung 980Pro 1TB - 1x Samsung 870 Evo 1TB - 1x SanDisc 120GB SSD - Heatkiller IV - MoRa3-360LT@9x120mm Noctua F12 - Corsair AXi-1200 - TiR5-Pro - Warthog Hotas - Saitek Combat Pedals - Asus XG27ACG QHD 180Hz - Corsair K70 RGB Pro - Win11 Pro/Linux - Phanteks Evolv-X
chrisgrind Posted January 20, 2020 Posted January 20, 2020 (edited) I've got ryzen 5 3600 with 5700xt. I haven't done any large multiplayer, but at 1920x1200 I don't go below 90fps that I have a seen. when I ran three screens 5760x1200 I got 50-60fps when not much was doing and as low as 25fps or so when more things were happening. Both with high settings then bumping view distance up further. When I go to medium settings, with 3 screens from memory, I was still above 60fps all the time. Oceandar Posted January 20, 2020 Posted January 20, 2020 I had bad experience with AMD driver in old DCS version. The FPS was way worst compared with NVIDIA. I'm now tempted to buy the 5700 XT because the price is like USD 100 cheaper compared to 2070 super. Is it still the case ? Because after watching some benchmarks I could see some games better with AMD and some don't. Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself is true power. - Lao Tze

Pilotasso Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 not going to bother with anything below 50% FPS increase over my 1080Ti. It was too expensive to replace it lightly minded and still performs like a champ. .
BitMaster Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 Bitmaster -- do you think Vulcan (if/when we get there) will favor amd gpus? I simply have no idea what will happen once we get there. My hope is that it will run on any modern GPU and that it will support mGPU so we can add cards rather than exchange cards. Pilotasso, 100% right. I am not willing to replace a 1k€ card for some extra FPS if I lock it at 60 fps anyway. Either it boosts me to 144Hz or I pass. I am not playing the Nvidia game anymore. Bob_Bushman Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 It would also be more suprising if Nvidia doesn't release 3080-3080ti in just a few months around GDC. i7 8700k @ 4.7, 32GB 2900Mhz, 1080ti, CV1 Virpil MT-50\Delta, MFG Crosswind, Warthog Throttle, Virptil Mongoost-50 throttle.
Gnadentod Posted January 23, 2020 Posted January 23, 2020 The Nitro+ 5700XT is more like a 2080FE than a 2070 Super, it's a 1080 Ti with 8GB instead of 11GB VRAM. I have Nitro+ 5700XT for HP Reverb, 115% SteamVR SS, mid settings in DCS and motionvector reprojection.

Gnadentod Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 (edited) are you having the problem I am ? Plug in the USB of the Reverb first time. Let WMR start, then close it and start it again. Should be gone. If not, plug it in once, let WMR start. Then close WMR, pull out the USB cable before WMR starts again automatically, wait for a few secs and plug the USB cable back in. Now, the blue edges are gone. Edited January 29, 2020 by Der Hirte

Hi, I have the problem with blue borders with Reverb and 5700 xt. Tried your method with unplugging and replugging the USB, but it doesn’t work. I can only get rid of the blue border if I change the resolution in WMR to upscaling, but that makes the image look worse. What driver are you using? I am on 19.11.1, newer ones give lots of black screen of death or WMR image is corrupted.
Gnadentod Posted February 21, 2020 Posted February 21, 2020 ... I'm using the 19.12.2 Adrenalin 2020 version from mid december. I have new info, you don't even need to unplug the headset. Plug it in, let WMR start. Then close WMR and start it a second time. Then the blue borders are gone for me, they are now black.
