With a Maverick selected, I change the waypoint to one with ground targets. If I uncage the seeker it will slew it automatically to the target area. However, there are a bunch of targets and it doesn't slew it exactly over the target. I change the maverick screen to be SOI (or whatever the F-18 calls it, I'm used to A-10Cs). If I hold the TDC depress button and try to slew it manually it will not move off of the waypoint. If I change the waypoint back to 0 then it recages itself. Is there a way to slew it to the target area automatically, then manually move it from there?

What Tholozor says. As long as there's a designation present, the missile seeker will remain slaved to that point in space. If you're unsure about which target it's locking onto, undesignate, slew and make sure the reticle is firmly over the target and not jumping around.

A somewhat related question. Flying the mission where we are supposed to take out helos on the ramp at the airfield I am flying in at 5000 ft and trying to slew the cross over a helo and push to lock it on. I have the screen zoomed in using FOV and step buttons but the helos are still tiny dots and it takes 5-6 tries to get a lock. Is there a better way? I can hit buildings no problem but the helos and the tanks in the training mission are so small.

May be. I can't tell how far away I am very well. So many times though, I keep trying for a lock, maybe get one and then try for another since there are maybe 8 helo sitting there. But as I keep trying, I either get shot down or I get so close I need more angle than the seeker can provide.

In a PP attack as you described, use the distance to the waypoint. As for the seeker being off angle, ensure you are nose onto the target whilst you are firing.

I haven't used a waypoint yet for targeting. This is another new skill I need to learn.

Undesignate, then you'll be able to slew.

On a similar note, in A2G mode trying to drop unguided bombs with a waypoint designated it will show its location on the ground. Is there a way to slew the SPI? If you undesignate it just disappears.

you activate to flir, slew the flir, activate back to MAV and it should reacquire the new spot (by memory)
