Whatever, these guys are just gibbering tech terms they saw on reddit and basing their world view on unrelated notions and a video game trailer. I've better things to do with my time, like watching paint dry @@

I'm thinking the same thing.

Yeah, I have, and I don't expect my video games to look exactly like it for another 20 years or so.

Who exactly is talking about exactly? The person said the maps are small and ugly, which is his opinion. You are free to disagree. That being said, the maps are minuscule compared to the world. That does seem to be an objective truth.

Are they ugly? Well there are very pretty aspects to them. However there are also very ugly aspects to them as well. Glass half full thing perhaps.

Since you are so well informed, on what do you base your 20 year estimate on when games will look exactly like the world?

..... no that is not the opposite of procedural generation. You can have a completely from scratch algorithm, like you describe, yes, OR you can have an algorithm that uses an approximate template (satellite data in this case) and fills in the details with... you guessed it, procedurally generated objects!

Sorry bro, you're way over your skis, Your taking a well defined computer science/game dev term, and abusing it. What you're referring to is merely post-processing of data, one time, and storing and using that post-processed / massaged data. Procedural generated implies generated from an algorithm, (typically using perlin noise for terrian for example) and other techniques, and nothing to do whatsoever with what you described.

No one is asking Eagle Dynamics to re-invent the wheel here. As others have pointed out, the information/data is available and license-able from 3rd parties, be it, google, MS and many others, and for what it's worth, no one is using satellite imagery for the fidelity we are talking here, that's 10 years ago tech :book:. Perhaps they should build their own compiler, hell, built a native programming language and a custom piece of hardware to run it on.

The only real show stopper why we wouldn't see this come to reality is merely an economics equation of the licensing costs vs expected gains in income being negative.

Please do, as a quick glace at your recent post history suggests you enjoy spending your time ruffling feathers instead. Got nothing nice to say... then don't.

You guys know that MS is using AI and a lot of manual labour to tweak Bing's imagery before streaming it into MSFS2020, right?

What Microsoft does is just model the key airports.

Everything else is the pure bind maps (ex-Nokia maps).

If you look the videos etc, you see that all the details on everything else are just like bind, with the all the same satellite data etc.

Don't be naive and think that Microsoft just rebuilds whole world just for FS2020...

A combat sim only needs theater maps, not the whole globe. There’s no point in that.

How about historical maps? Like, for WWII or Vietnam?

Dcs map have so many Easter eggs so I don't agree with "small and ugly" and NO. What you prefer bigger map with less detail or smaller map with more detail.

Bigger map with smaller areas of high detail.

Combat sims have had a blind spot for this for decades. They always think in Theater of Operations mode. It's more DCS Arenas than DCS World still.

Right

War is global now. You can still both do Theater packs, and have the whole thing sitting on a nice Ortho/Mesh/GIS global map.

And honestly doing that would also streamline a hell of a lot of Theater development workflow since you wouldn't have to fudge so much to make a map work on a flat "world" base.

I beg to differ.

Plus the aforementioned fudging that has to be done on current flat maps...
