Today about 1900 Polish CASA C-295 crashed during landing approach. According to information by Polish Air Force spokesman there were 18 people onboard and all of them died.

It is highly likely that there were high rank Polish Air Force officers among them.

There is no information about possible causes of the accident.

The first information was that "something happened"... that "a wheel" went off... Then I thought C-295 has a multiwheel landing gear - pilot would probably manage to deal with it. Appearently it was reporter b*it... One of them said that C-295 can carry 200 tons of load (sic!).

Then new pieces information came out. There were casualties... And I expect the worst because you know how it is in military aviation accidents - everyone survive... or no one :(

A friend of mine said me that C-295 landing gear hooked with a tree's branch in a very low approximation... I don't know if this is true, better waiting for a official statement.

RIP :(

Polish news

http://wiadomosci.onet.pl/1679093,11,item.html

It seems that there's no information from foreign press yet.

The sad irony is that most of the passengers were attending National Aviation Safety Conference. The tragic night they were coming back home or to their parent bases.

What we know is that plane crashed about 1,5 - 2 km from runway during final approach.

Maybe there's more but I don't really feel like going through news right know ...

The reason of crash is unknown yet. Military specialists are still looking for blackbox. Victims are high rank officers.

:( RIP

Poko do you know Polish CASA CN-235 plane is bought from where and when? In Turkey we produce them under by Spanish license but I didnt hear even one of them crashed in Turkey. People thinks that it's a secure plane.

Yes, I do. This was CASA C-295 M - bought in 2007 side number 019. Built by EADS CASA in Spain. It has been believed it is the most safe aircraft in polish air forces. It's first crash of CASA i Poland. Official satements say that there was 20 people onboard - not 18 or 19 as previously stated.

I think it is the first CASA C-295 crash ever. I mean all C-295s in service around the world.

Yes it is true. First crash around the world.

Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D

I'm sure there are more causes then this. However the main reason behind it is that in Polish Air Force the procedure to send the a/c to backup airfield is flawed. It exists - but is not used - because this causes futher problems to the ones involved in sending a/c and its crew to other air base then original destination. The pressure to land the a/c at its destination is even greater when on board there are VIPs. I know what I'm talking about.

I'm sure Miroslawiec METOFFICE has "fixed" weather just to let formally the a/c and pilots to land, but the weather was much worse - not allowing this type of a/c nor pilots to land. They said visibility was 3km and cloud base 60m. I know from experience that whenever VIP was ever taking off or landing, we were fixing the weather - so we were forced to change even 60m base to like 200m, and fix the visibility - so we were faking METARs. I know it sounds crazy, but this is reality and I can even said it in front of a court! I knew this shit will happen one day. The common practice in Polish Air Force to force a/c/pilots in insane weather at the destination at all cost! where normally a civilian a/c of simmilar type (here ATR 72-500) would be sent to land on a backup airfield.

It was the second attempt of their landing, and they failed. On the first attempt pilot actually said he has no clue where the runway is! So they've made second attempted and landed on top of the trees. If METEO sent METAR with BKN002 or OVC002 in this case (60m base), they definately fixed the weather from like 0m (sky not visible). Pretty much entire Poland had terrible weather that days, and this was in the late night already - with 6m/s wind, and constant medium rain. Pilots experienced severe turbulence in this cloud I'm sure (I was flying in ATR 72-202 plane day before in a bit better weather from EPPO to EPWA, and I we had turbulence and terrible wind shear during the climb that actually dropped us nose down!). So if CASA pilots actually experienced additionaly wind shear few hundred meters before touchdown, on idling power - they had no chances to recover. I'm just speculating maybe - but I'm sure both ATC and METEO agreed to fix the weather - so their own commander plus the other VIPs can land that night.

Problem of Polish Air Force is that whenever a/c is sent to backup airfield both pilots, atcs, meteo.. whatever.. everyone has to explain themselves, and people are punished and there are severe consequences (the question arises "Who allowed this?! (sending a/c to backup airfield)" - where in civil aviation it is normal procedure now - because safety is more important then egos of the few. Mobbing in Polish Air Force has been there for ages and it was not the very first crash where human factor - and mobbing especially - was the main cause. Maybe this time THEY WILL WAKE UP!!! and finally quit punishing ATCs and pilots and others involved (like METEO) when a/c is sent to backup airfield - even with VIPs who will have to spend there overnight.

CRAZY

I'M MAD

I KNEW IT WAS COMMING.

To be honest, just almost minutes after it happened (I was watching TV when it happened and heard the breaking news).. I have checked on educational sites what kind of weather was there and compared it to what METEO actually claimed they have sent in their METAR.

Bull!!! They have definately fixed the weather.

I will never forget how I was mobbed by my supervisors, and felt that one day something huge and definitely loud will crash because of this practice - and here it is.

Why I know all this? I used to serve on EPKS - 31st Airbase Poznan-Krzesiny, the last stop of that CASA a/c before it crashed at Miroslawiec.

Sorry for no grammar, typos and such.. I'm just fed up with all this. I foresaw this coming.

Shaman, maybe you should report it to the Polish Attorneys then. What you are telling sounds like this one Polish Su-22 which crashed because the pilots werent redirected to a divert airfield because of bad weather...

Well, first people have to die, than maybe something will be fixed.

Tail number 019 C-295M plane was delivered to Polish Army only 6 months ago. It had only 400 hours flight time. Until accident report will complete, Polish army stopped other C-295M flights. On the other hand Polish army is going to buy 12 C-295M planes more. Before crash pilot didn't inform to tower any malfunction in plane.

I'm very happy that finally "heads a rollin'...". I have been waiting for this since I used to work as mil. aviation meteorologist @ 31st AB Poznan-Krzesiny - AIRPORT TOWER/METOFFICE. This kind of behavior was routine already at that times, and the most ironic thing is that persons most responsible for the current state died inside the plane.

Yeah... I think You're right unfortunatelly. Sorry to say that.

Routin is the biggest enemy of aviation.

I just can't understand why LSO got dismissed. He got the order to take the duty and crashing airplane was not in his intension for sure. He's dismissed because he hasn't learnt to work with transporters yet? Or is it fault of his commander to put him on that station?
