MADLOU1 Posted August 6, 2020 Posted August 6, 2020 (edited) Just got this map. All I can say is "Holy Smokes!" The detail is stunning. The only problem is now Im spoiled. All the other maps (in particular, Normandy which I fly over mostly because I am a warbird nut) seem dull now. Any way they can update the other maps to look as good as this one? Last night I just drove a truck through Dover and up into the castle through the gate and was blown away by the visuals. ED should really consider full fidelity car and tank modules to fully utilize the potential of such beautiful maps. I can easily imagine some fun 1930/40s cross country race. It's a sheer joy to fly over low and slow. I've been into flight sims since the mid 80's and sub logic wire graphics on 8086's but this takes the cake. Well done everyone, and yes, its early release but please don't dumb it down. For me it finally has the detail required for helicopters and ground based activity. It certainly gives my poor old 4770k haswell a run with all 4 cores at 100% but it's still smooth @ 4.4ghz, 32gb of ancient 2013 ram and a 2080. Reminds me of how we used to use Flight Sim to "test" PC's Slowly getting back into DCS, and being that my main interest is WWII, I am interested in the Channel map. Is there a big difference in computing power needs between Normandy and the Channel maps? I am currently able to fly the P51/A8 on Normandy without any problems. Should I expect to have to lower my graphics settings to do the same on the Channel map? My intention is to also add the Nevada and Channel maps, but a big consideration for me is to also be able to use ground vehicles. How enjoyable is the Channel map when seen from any of the vehicles included in the combined arms/WWII assets pack? Thanks Edited January 31, 2021 by Callsign112
YSIAD_RIP Posted February 1, 2021 Posted February 1, 2021 On my System The Channel Map does render less FPS compared to Normandy. However, the Channel Map always looks great! Example: Flying 300-500 feet over a busy city The Channel gives me 6 to 10 less FPS compared to Normandy Flying very low skimming roof tops The Channel, sadly, gives me up to 20 FPS less than Normandy. This is all understandable because The Channel has many more buildings in their cities where Normandy has more trees in their cities. Conclusion: With my system - it does struggle in the parts of the Channel Map that are most densely populated with buildings. For example - around Dover Castle FPS can drop to an almost unplayable 35 FPS in my P-47. Normandy does not get the credit it now deserves since it received the major enhancements updates last year. Normandy is much more enjoyable when the colour tones are fixed using this MOD: GTM:Normandy by Barthek 2 Do not own: | F-15E | JF-17 | Fw 190 A-8 | Bf 109 | Hardware: [ - Ryzen7-5800X - 64GB - RX 6800 - X56 HOTAS Throttle - WINWING Orion 2 F16EX Grip - TrackIR 5 - Tobii 5C - JetPad FSE - ]

But what is weird is that I am now also having problems on the Normandy map where I didn't before. I use to be able to fly at water level across the English Channel with no stutter, now my computer freezes.
Callsign112 Posted February 23, 2021 Posted February 23, 2021 I though it would be interesting to show the performance that can be expected from a low end system on the Normandy and Channel Island maps. The first part of the video is from the Normandy map, which changes to the Channel map at 4:31 in the timeline with the P51. While you can get DCS to run reasonably well on what is a rather economical system by today's standards, a more powerful graphics cards is needed to maintain FPS above 45 at low altitude. What I have noticed since returning to DCS is that the screen often flickers now, especially when I am flying in a more populated (memory intensive), area even on the Normandy map where I never saw this before. I don't know if this is a bug, or a product of low end graphics/low system memory. 1

The latest drivers just dont like the Channel Map. 2
Volator Posted March 7, 2021 Posted March 7, 2021 Bought the map yesterday. It's very beautiful! The little details everywhere make it the best rendition of a 1940s scenery I've seen so far (compared to other sims). I'd really love to have a DCS Tiger Moth to explore the map low and slow now. 1 1./JG71 "Richthofen" - Seven Eleven
