[CORRECT AS IS] MAN RNG knob (axis) implemented yet?

Recommended Posts

After revival of my old Cougar throttle, I'm now picking up the Viper again bit by bit. Starting, obviously, with binding my HOTAS.

Can anyone tell me, is the manual range axis working yet? I bound it to the MAN RNG/UNCAGE knob on my HOTAS, but the radar range doesn't seem to respond inside the cockpit.

Could be that I'm doing something wrong (my Viper knowledge became a little rusty after not playing it for months). I'm 100% positive the Cougar axis is responding as it should, so no issue there

MAN RNG is for TPOD zooming, not radar related AFAIK. Radar elevation knob is going to change radar elevation, while radar range is controlled via the TDC cursor moving to the top or bottom of the page (or by clicking the MFD range buttons).

MAN Range also changes the gain in AG radar mode

If anyone is curious why the "manual range" knob is called that, it's because it was used to choose the air to air gunnery range (700' / 1500') before EEGS. Some F-16s have all three gunsight options SNAP and LCOS along with EEGS. I don't know if this variant is EEGS only or not. I've heard 50/52 have the older sight options, 50+/52+ don't. Foreign customers also don't.

In TWS, moving the radar cursor up and down won't change the radar scale, you can only do it by clicking the OSB buttons. However, once you have locked something up in TWS, as the target gets closer and closer, TWS will automatically decrease the radar scale for you.

If you just want to change the radar through HOTAS without reaching your hand to the mouse to click the OSB buttons, you can TMS down to switch to RWS, move the cursor to change the radar scale to your liking, and TMS right long to switch back to TWS.

Another tip, you should never use TWS to search for targets though, because it's way slower than RWS on the F-16 (at least in the current state since AA radar is still WIP), use RWS to scan and find your targets, then switch to TWS if you wanna engage multiple targets. Also, RWS soft lock (SAM mode) in the current build does not adjust the radar scale and radar elevation for you, so even when you are engaging a single target, it's better to soft lock the target in RWS, then TMS right long to hold the lock in TWS, because TWS is much more stable to hold the lock in the current build.
