This is advanced barrel distortion adjustment tool for advanced users who knows what they're doing and wants to tweak their SteamVR headsets.  This most likely will not work on headsets that piggy back on SteamVR such as WMR or Oculus.

There's no harm just using it and playing with the values as long as you don't press the "DANGER! Write Configuration" button.

But if you press that button, your original configuration will be replaced forever and you will never get it back unless you know how to backup and restore original configuration.

I originally used this tool to correct barrel distortion after replacing my lens.  But a useful adjustment I found is "Grow".  It basically determines render region of your HMD's display.  And default value of 0.6 was way outside my field of view.  Lowering it to 0.4 made no difference to field of view but squeezed more pixels in smaller area which made everything much sharper.  Free supersampling.

Focal distance adjustment is also useful.

If you have backed up your original configuration and decide to write the configuration, another advice is that when it tells you to restart, turning off SteamVR and restarting it gave me error (and a heart attack).  I have to use "Restart Headset" under Devices to successfully write the configuration.

Again, this is for advanced users and use it at your own risk.

Is the grow option the same as the one in the shader mod  you can adjust ?

No, the option is shader mod is mask.  Basically covering up the not visible region.

Grow actually shrinks the render region.  So it's squeezing same amount of pixels in smaller area.

What do you mean by forever? Does it change things on a software level that would allow for settings to be reverted through a reinstall or whatever or does it do something else?

For most, lens distortion setting is saved on your HMD.  Because not all lens are same so distortion setting is unique to your HMD.  You will see this when you use the tool, settings for your left and right eyes are not exactly same.

SteamVR will download and upload the setting from and to your HMD.  So if you upload without backup, that unique original setting is lost.

Think of it as BIOS update except it's unique BIOS specifically for your system.

The app by default does back up your previous (not original) setting.  It did restore mine to previous setting when I had it crashed first time.  But I wouldn't trust it 100% so you should still make manual backup of the config file and also take screenshot of your original setting as another backup.

Below is how to backup and restore for Vive Pro.  Directory may be different for different headset and you need to find out on your own.  If this all seem overwhelming, I advise not to use it.

So will this work for the Valve Index as well?

As it seems dangerous....Is there a way to backup the original settings or we just do have to write down the original settings?

Anyway thanks....Seems quite interesting.

I cannot try right now as my index is in RMA, but as the replacement will be here I will surely try

Never had a problem, it's a thing in the G2 though.

I just wish the index had the clarity of the G2 since it is the way better headset

Let's hope Vulcan brings the index back to the game (higher ss)

I am not sure but if it's not compatible, then it wouldn't even run.  And as I said, as long as you don't write config, there's no danger in trying it.

Reading about it sounds like it wont work for Index.

Again, I meant to post this in Vive section.  If a moderator sees this, please move it.
