gryper Posted December 16, 2020 Posted December 16, 2020 (edited) I just bought a new computer thinking it would suffice to play DCS and other flight sims. I have an RTX2080 Super with a i9-10900x with 32GB of RAM. I am seeing these videos on YT and the graphics and frame-rates are excellent. I have all my settings maxed and while it looks pretty good, my frame rates are pretty bad. I am using Oculus Rift S so I expect some graphics reduction there, but I am talking about on my monitor. So where did I screw up buying this new computer? I am quite disappointed. Everyone told me my new system would be pretty much "top of the line" but I certainly am not seeing it with any of my flight sims. I was inclined to believe the technology just isnt there yet to run at max settings with good frame rates, but I see others with "lesser" systems running everything just fine. Even my monitor is new, 4k with G-sync. And what system should I have bought if not this one? Thanks, AG -And if this is the wrong place to ask, please let me know. I didn't see any "help" section here. Edited December 16, 2020 by gryper Because typos drive me nutso
kotor633 Posted December 16, 2020 Posted December 16, 2020 (edited) Hi, you will probably have to 'play' with your graphics settings. To believe that you are simply buying expensive hardware and everything is good is not. You say your frame rates are pretty bad. What's bad for you and how do you think it should be? It may be helpful if you post your NVIDIA and DCS settings. Maybe someone here in the forum can then be given tips on where you could improve. Or there are also good videos on youtube, enter 'dcs world graphics settings' as a search term. You could then take these as a basic setting and fine-tune them so that they are optimal according to your perception. Try without MSAA/SSAA first. If OK without - try MSAA 2x OR SSAA 1.5x. If OK go up or set both. SSLR is heavy on the card but effects are rarely seen - decide if you want it. Burt Posted December 16, 2020 Posted December 16, 2020 Don’t forget about your setting in your nvidia control panel too that’s super important and it should blend everything in with DCS settings. 1 ALIENWARE R11 - I9 10900KF @ 5.1 GHz - M.2 NVMe 2TB - RTX3090 - XFURY 64GB -3400 MHz RAM Monitor AW3420DW @ 120Hz - Virpil CM3 Throttle - TM TPR Rudder pedals - Virpil CM2 w/TM Hornet Stick Center - Monstertech Deck Mounts RealSimulator FSSB-R3 Lightning Base w/ F16SRGRH SideStick - VR user / Varjo Aero - Big Thx to mbucchia Start Date April 2020
Lurker Posted December 16, 2020 Posted December 16, 2020 (edited) It can be a lot of things. Do you have an SSD? Is DCS installed on the SSD? What is your cooling solution for your processor? Is your RAM running at it's rated speed? What is maxed settings? Are you maxing out MSAA? Don't do that unless you wan't a slideshow. First of all, update your drivers. Then update windows. Then turn off Windows Game Bar. Then turn off Full Screen Compatibility mode. TURN OFF VSYNC IN OPTIONS. After that play with some of your settings until you get the desired framerate. With VR it's a mixed bag and don't expect too much but with that rig you should be able to run 4k easily with most settings up there easily. (Not MSAA, keep that at x2 MAX!) No PC can run DCS with all settings maxed out without becoming a slide-show, this is doubly and even triply true for VR. You can't run even close to the same setting in VR as you can in 2d. Trust me. I know this, I have the 3090RTX and the Rift S and even I am still struggling to get the sim running judder free. gryper Posted December 16, 2020 Author Posted December 16, 2020 Lurker - Yeah I have a 2TB Samsung 870 SD it is installed on. Cooling is an Corsair H100i Pro XT RGB. RAM running at rated speed - Not sure, attached is a photo of what CPUID is telling me. This thing was optimized for gaming when it came from the factory last month. Everything has been updated in the last two weeks. I turned my MSAA from 4x to 2x and turned terrain shadows off. I'll mess with it a bit and see what happens. Thanks everyone above for the help. I'll check back.
