Wdigman Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 My DCS drive, a Samsung 860 SSD at 500 GB, is nearing capacity. After I purchased the Syria map I have had to unload other modules to fit everything. So.... Time for an upgrade. Currently I have all of the Maps except the Channel. I have 2 war-birds, all A10s, Flaming cliffs MiG 21, F 18, F16, SU 33. and others. So the drive is full and I can even load everything I own. I plan on purchasing all of the currently planned maps, Marianas, South Atlantic, Afghanistan... or was Iraq next? Maps take up the most space; I will need to get the Harrier with South Atlantic so there is that. What would be the suggested size of Hard Drive I will need for all of these modules? Say someone purchased every module and map available right now, how big of a Drive would be needed to run DCS? Any Idea what that number grows to in the next two years? FYI 1 TB SSDs have dropped in price, for $100 USD more you can get 2 TB drives, all are the Samsung 860s. Whats practical and whats total overkill.
GoodHope Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 (edited) I remember 20 some odd years ago people laughed when I bought a hard-drive (and paid a ton of money for it)... "What a 3.5" floppy not big enough for you? <eye roll>" If I would have said someday I'll have 64Gig of RAM their heads would have exploded. I guess I should add I have two 1TB SSDs and if I had it to do over again I would have went with one 2TB SSD and one 1TB SSD. I thought I was nuts doing two 1TB drives, but one of them is almost full. Edited January 20, 2021 by GoodHope clarification

MrBest Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 To extend the life of your SSD drive, try not to completely fill it. Just was learning about that on some tech tips. So if you just have DCS open beta on its own SSD a 1TB drive should hold it for a while.
JCook Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 Updating my DCS system also. 1 TB ssd for open beta and 1TB ssd for regular dcs world. Separate 250GB ssd for the OS.

I would just like to know how you are filling a 500Gb drive with DCS when an install with almost everything is around 250Gb. Wdigman Posted January 21, 2021 Author Posted January 21, 2021 Sorry Its a 250 GB drive. So yeas everything I own could fit on a 500 GB. My question is about future maps. Syria was pretty big, will upcoming maps be as large? And yes using half an SSD increases longevity.

Aluminum Donkey Posted February 11, 2021 Posted February 11, 2021 I remember buying my first SATA SSD just for DCS and nothing else. It's DCS so it has to be fast, so an SSD is good--but, it's still DCS, so I better get a HUGE one. That way, I'll never run out of room, plus I'll have some extra space for Windows and some other things. 240 GB. I'll NEVER fill all that space up AD Kit: B550 Aorus Elite AX V2, Ryzen 7 5800X w/ Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE, 2 x 16GB Kingston Fury DDR4 @3600MHz C16, Asus ROG Strix RTX 4070 Ti Super 16GB, EVGA SuperNova 750 G2 PSU, HP Omen 32" 2560x1440, Thrustmaster Cougar HOTAS fitted with Leo Bodnar's BU0836A controller. --Aviation is the art of throwing yourself at the ground, and having all the rules and regulations get in the way! max22 Posted February 12, 2021 Posted February 12, 2021 Unless you are writing 50 gigs a day your ssd will last decades, but if you wish to add a layer of safety then choose one that is MLC or even better an SLC ssd.
