Well I've been getting my hardware list together to make purchases for my DCS sim rig. As you guys know, the collective market is pretty thin out there. I have an idea though, and thought I would run it by you guys...

Can you take a CH Pro Throttle and turn the base 90 degrees to the left and use it like a collective....??

Now bear with me....if you notice the CH Throttle is pretty symetrically laid out as far as the buttons on the face. If you turn the entire unit over 90 degrees and look down on it, it should look like a combat helicopter's collective. You may have to angle it to get the natural up and down slide so it doesn't put your hand in an uncomfortable position. It will have to be positioned near your left thigh to feel right.

If you have a CH Throttle, let me know what you think.

The CH Throttle is a slider throttle. It does not ascend/decend on an pivot point. I think most, if not all helicopters, have a collective on a pivot point.

Your idea could be done with a few modifications.

Without modifications, one main problem would be that you would have to always keep your hand on the collective. If you didn't, it would slide down(it has no resistance) resulting in no collective(if the throttle inputs were reversed.)

This could be easily fixed. All you have to do is apply some resistance so the collective doesn't fall down.

I hope to mod my CH throttle into a CH collective(with a pivot point) one day.

Good luck.

Why not use two sticks just as choppers do? I will try to do that... you can just build some kind of support for the left stick so that it can be tilted forward, and then make some plate that hinders x-axis movement. Removing the spring would probably be a good Idea too.

I dont think i did a good job of describing what i meant.

Ok, imagine holding the throttle like you would in a fighter, it slides fwd and back. Ok still holding the throttle, pick it up and rotate it with your hand like you are holding a gun. Now postition it near your left thigh so you can slide it up and down like a collective.

And i have to think that is has some resistance built in. If it doesn't then I guess this is just a waste of disk space on a server somewhere. :)

The CH throttle has only 1 small defect: it doesnt have an afterburner detent. Other than that it offers awsome versatibility and ammount of buttons. Infact you can play it alongside an average entry level stick and still surpass almost all other HOTAS packs out there.

That's a good thing if you are turning it into a collective.

I'm still wondering how I'll modify my Cougar so that I can still use one throttle quadrant for fixed and rotary flight...

I did as you described and unless I have a faulty CH throttle, there is no resistance whats so ever. I lift collective up(holding it as you described), let go and it drops.

But like I said, it wouldn't be hard to modify.

It is a superb throttle with plenty of programmable buttons.

When Black Shark comes out(THIS YEAR BTW:thumbup:) I see myself modifying it and using it in the way that you described.

I plan to modify a X-52 throttle. I will extend the throttle lever and add a counter weigth so it won't move if you let it go. I think that is better than increasing the friction as it will cause to much wear.

No detent? Really? :smilewink:

I see, sounds doable if you could rig it just so it feels right..

But I'd go a step further and take a non-slider throttle (like that on the X-52), change the handle so that it points straight up from the base and then tilt the base 90 degrees forward..

For myself I'm in the middle of building my second one from scratch :) (the first one was for my brother since he has the electronics know-how to make it work right)...

These are cool!

These are too!

I don't think you can buy those though, eventhough their site suggests you might..

But they are indeed very cool.. There are however some that make and sell Jetranger-like collectives (too few buttons on those though, I don't have any links, sorry)..

I'm going to have to make some modifictions/changes to my X-52 also to make it more Helo friendly.

What ever happened to the collective that a guy created for the X45/52 series that was using a game pad? I thought he was going to sell it specifically for DCS:BS.

From the last I remember he had done a fantastic job on it, even had the programming worked out.
