Quest 2 or rift s with 2700x and gtx1080. Is the quest 2 feasible?

I can go pick up a quest 2 today or order a rift S.
seems the update helped with vr so I was wondering if a quest 2 would work or should I order the rift s considering the price is the same.

I have a Rift S (and before that a CV1) i previously ran on a 1070 . It was overall a great experience , but i felt greatly the inability to sharpen the image via DCS pd . For that reason , i question the 1080's ability to handle the Q2's pixel count - although it  should be noted that HP recommends the 1080 as the minimum for the slightly-higher res Reverb .

More to the point in your decision-making process , you should consider your use-case . If you play VR games as well as sims , perhaps the stand-alone capability of the Quest would benefit .

Another consideration would be your (unspecified) cpu . I understand that the encoding necessary to compress the video for usb-cable transmission adds a significant cpu burden .

Finally , FB  has shown little love for the S since its introduction , reserving all development efforts for the Q and Q2 . In fact , i read just today that S manufacture has discontinued .

If all this sounds ambivalent , it is because i have no dog in your fight , and merely wish to provide such pros and cons as i am aware .

I just recently picked up a Quest 2. I'm happy with it. It's in it's infancy in terms of software but that will evolve.

I'm running a Quest 2 and a GTX 1070, 32Go of RAM and  ryzen5 3600

definitely not my dream setup, but it's playable and I will not go back to 2D

In order to run it smoothly you will probably need some modifications.

Here are mine :

- Oculus app on recommended settings (72hz for me)

- installation of modified shaders (see thread elsewhere in the forum)

- oculus tray tool app running with the following settings : ASW forced @ 30hz / Quest Link on 1070 preset

next step : play with DCS system/VR settings to your liking, you should obtain a pretty smooth experience

About as accurate as A comment could be. That’s pretty much exactly what the process was and I absolutely love it.
Mira now(finally) butter smooth.  It was playable before but after the tweaks, I couldn’t ask for a smoother experience.
between that and the gladiator nxt upgrade at the same time, my experience is literally night and day. I absolutely love it and like u said, I’ll NEVER go back to 2d

I have jumped on the 2.7 bandwagon, and here is a quick update.

For record I have a GTX1070 32go of RAM and a Ryzen 5 3600

I was expecting a terrible FPS drop when switching to 2.7, but that's actually quite the contrary. I have a significant improvment

my personnal recipe is :

.All modified shaders uninstalled or removed

.Oculus tray tool set at 30hz ASW and 'rift link'  tab set on 1070 preset

.Latest nvidia drivers installed

.That's all !

My personnal benchmark test  is :

F18 ->instant action, -> nevada -> freeflight  then I dive on las vegas and for a very low fly along the Stripe boulevard, at 100ft

When I turn my head on the right and left to have a good look at the house and the vegas pyramid. Everything is very smooth. Even with scenery details at max so you can spot details like aircooler unit on the roofs. I could'n be more happy with this update.

Be warned : I have tried to reinstall modified shaders hoping I would squeeze out some more FPS, but that didn't happen, it makes the simulation stutter at low altitude on my benchmark. So I had to removed them. My guess is DCS did a very good work on the V2.7 shaders, Right now, in my experience, the modified shaders are no longer needed. But that's an assumption based on my sole and personnal experience.

Nope, virtual desktop is for connecting wirelessly  to your PC. I think you won't need it anymore with the next firmware updates.

You still need a fast wifi router/AP

On a usb connection you only need the oculus software on PC. It's probably more stable .

DCS won't open in VR. It starts to load, but shuts down as soon as the menu is supposed to come up. Works fine when i start it outside of VR. Any suggestions?

Assuming you use an Oculus headset , i've been having this problem since several oculus updates ago . Now i start oculus , minimise it , and then start DCS . I use Skatezilla's gui to start DCS (VERY useful) , or you can modify the DCS executable  icon by subscripting _vr in its properties .

What does skatezilla do exactly?  And why do u use it to start dcs?  I’ve seen it spoken of but dont understand what it’s for

It is a very handy gui that makes updating , reverting , launching in vr or 2d and many other things a one-click operation .

Yes. I picked up the Quest 2 Saturday. But I gotta say, NOT IMPRESSED with VR. Resolution really sucks at this point; I can't even read the DDIs in the hornet. I'm still trying a few tweaks. It might be the cable I got; though it shows up at USB3 (I have it plugged in to a 3.1 Gen 2 port), the speed on the cable is only 866 kbps. Should I cough it up and pay the $80 for the Oculus Link cable?

Yeah , the mfd/ddi res took a hit in 2.7 . I had no problem in 2.5 . Hopefully they'll fix it .

You can gain some sharpness by use of pd in DCS vr settings , but don't expect the same res in vr , particularly at distances of ~ 20 meters or greater . In-cockpit , the best systems can only approximate 1080p .

The tradeoffs are 3d vision and the corresponding sense of depth (and altitude) , and a much-improved situational awareness . And critically , the infinitely-greater sense of immersion from being IN that cockpit , and IN that world .

Definitely, IN the cockpit is nice, and the movement of the plane is nice. I noticed there is not a lot of sense of moving fast, but maybe that gets better when low to the ground. I'm glad to know that the cockpit res issues are new to 2.7, because at first I was wondering what drugs all the VR players were taking! LOL I'm going to upgrade my Link cable to one that is spec'd out to 5 Gbps today. Found a third party cable that is $20 cheaper than the one Oculus puts out.

I was able to launch successfully from the DCS Utility program. I also reinstalled the Oculus software, which appeared to clear things up on that side.

I don’t have any issue with my Quest 2 and can read texts on DDI or side console fine (wired mode). Performance-wise it is roughly the same as my Valve Index, but only downside I found is that the screen on the Index is so much brighter, more vibrant and contrasty which makes DDI and MFD screens easier to see.

Overall, I'm having better luck wireless than Link. Still trying to get used to using mouse or controller. I'm still on the fence about VR, but I'm hoping some tweaking will change my mind.

I recommend running at 80Hz unless you have a high-end GPU, play around with OculusDebugTool.exe (in Support\oculus-diagnostics\) and adjust Encode Resolution Width, Bitrate, Pixels Override according to your GPU's power.  I typically run mine with force half fps, ASW enabled.  This would've been a near perfect headset for me if the screen quality is as good as the Index, since the resolution is a tad higher and edge to edge clarity is as good.

Yes, the resolution looks a bit better, and the contrast is better - with wireless, that is.

I'll give this a try. I'm running a RTX 2070 Super, clocked to 2080 specs.
