Tank50us Posted May 2, 2021 Posted May 2, 2021 While only a concept at the moment, there is a plan by the PLA to make their Su33s (called the J15) a CATOBAR (Catapult Assisted Take Off But Arrested Recovery for those not in the know) styled aircraft. While not a huge deal, I do think it would be nice to see this proposed modification be a thing in DCS, especially since the Su33 comes with the Super Carrier. Right now, the Flanker-D can only take off from the Kuztensov (well, it can take off of a Nimitz, but it'll need a good run-up), and I think it would be nice if people could use it on the SCM in the manor the PLAN is looking to do. Ideally, it shouldn't be a hard thing to implement given that the main aircraft already exists, and making the modification in DCS could be as simple as a checkbox in the ME (and in the re-arm screen). What do you guys think? Would you welcome this small addition?
Kang Posted May 2, 2021 Posted May 2, 2021 Main point of the Su-33 coming with the Supercarrier module is the updated Kuznetsov, really. Personally not so much interested in adding a modification that somebody might be doing to a similar aircraft. 2

Personally not so much interested in adding a modification that somebody might be doing to a similar aircraft. there is apparently evidence to support the claims, namely that China has been developing a EMALS similar to other nations (namely the US), and they've modified their training platform to not have the ski jump, so there's a good bet that the modifications are real, it's just that no one has gotten a chance to photograph any J15s with it yet. But the concept art does exist, and although hard to see (picture below), you can see that the J15s here do have the launch bar on the nose gear. But, it's ultimately up to ED, I'm just floating the idea, and I'm sure some out there would like it so that they can have a cheaper CATOBAR aircraft that isn't the A4 mod.
Northstar98 Posted May 2, 2021 Posted May 2, 2021 (edited) Personally, I don't see the appeal until we get an appropriate aircraft carrier (such as the Type 003 - which isn't even built yet), and a J-15 module of some description. The main developer this concerns is Deka, though it depends on whether they can do a suitable J-15. As for their ships, I personally don't find their current offering to be up to standard, and the Type 071 is easily the worst offender. As for the ships, I just like sending them to have meetings with Davy Jones. As for the J15 itself... It's more toys for RedFor at least, even if it is just a modified Su33. 1

Oh I totally agree, I just think that we need to get appropriate assets and an appropriate J-15, before sticking a launch bar onto anything. I mean, technically the J-11 should look more like a Su35 in the pit, but it's just a re-skinned Su27 with new toys to launch. I guess my point of this post is "Hey, here's a thing that can be done by someone on a weekend at EDs, and it would add functionality to a plane that ships with a another module as it is" Edited May 2, 2021 by Tank50us

Wouldn't that depend on the J-11 variant? As I understand it the J-11 or J-11A is essentially a rebuilt Su-27SK (the SK being an export variant of our Su-27S) while the J-11B is something more Su-35-ish at least AFAIK. And the J-11 in DCS is FC3, and not full fidelity, and it was essentially a very cheap way of doing one. Tank50us Posted May 2, 2021 Author Posted May 2, 2021 I actually just found a couple photos of what I've been talking about, so it is a real thing: So it seems that it's not just a concept any more, they are actually serious about CATOBAR.
upyr1 Posted May 2, 2021 Posted May 2, 2021 I would be happy with an AI J-15 and Chinese Kuznetsov-class carrier for right now

The real thing is based on a prototype version of the Su33, but the one we could get in game would effectively be a copy of the Su33, with the addition of the more advanced weapons and the catapult launching equipment for use on a CATOBAR carrier. Especially given that Marianas is not that far around the corner.
