ctguy1955 Posted July 25, 2021 Posted July 25, 2021 (edited) Win 10 only has until 2025 and then all MB's have to have TPL and My Maximus VII Formula does not, so I cant use win 11. I like My Corsair ATX case and already have a corsair 1050 PSU, and My EVGA 2080Ti is fine. Going back 4 years ago with 2 watercooled GTX 680's, I was able to run My PC at over 5Ghz and now it always crashes if I go over 4.8 I won the lottery when it came to My devils canyon and what I should be asking instead of writing all of the above is: Is the speed of a new CPU more important for running DCS 2.7 and future versions rather then the number of CORES ? I thought DCS only uses 2 cores, one for sound and one for graphics ? Intel Core i7-10700KF Desktop Processor 8 Cores up to 5.1 GHz Unlocked Without Processor Graphics LGA1200 (Intel 400 Series chipset) 125W Intel Core i7-10700K Desktop Processor 8 Cores up to 5.1 GHz Unlocked LGA1200 (Intel 400 Series Chipset) 125W (BX8070110700K) Intel Core i7-11700K Desktop Processor 8 Cores up to 5.0 GHz Unlocked LGA 1200 125W Bundle with ROG Strix Z590-E Gaming WiFi Motherboard DDR4 4X M.2, USB 3.2 Type-C Aura Sync RGB ASUS ROG Strix Z490-H Gaming Z490 LGA 1200 (Intel 10th Gen) ATX Gaming Motherboard (12+2 Power Stages,DDR4 4600, Intel 2.5 Gb Ethernet, USB 3.2 Gen 2, Aura Sync) Rog has many MB's and I have the ability to water cool the MB like I do with the 6 year old one I have now. If speed of CPU is the best thing for DCS rather then number of cores would the above KF or K version be ok, and would a series 11 rather then a series 10 be better or should I just save the money as DCS has had many years to update to Direct X 12 and never did so. I know Vulkan or whatever new thing is called may replace DX12, and I am sorry I don't know this info. Thank You for any links or help in this matter, I just sold My 2016 HD Dyna and now have the money to upgrade my PC and wish to do so ASAP ! LucShep Posted July 26, 2021 Posted July 26, 2021 (edited) The price between Intel 10th and 11th gen is too big for such a miniscule difference in gaming performance (less than 7%, which is imperceptible in practice). The advantage of 11th gen (over 10th gen) is that it supports PCIe gen 4, usefull for the fastest of the fastest NVMe SSDs (which make zero difference for gaming, and very expensive), whereas 10th gen supports PCIe gen 3 - which will still provide speeds far beyond any intensive game, for years. For now, and for DCS, you don't need more than 6 cores (such as the i5 10600K which is still excelent) and, yes, high clocks still matter. But still, I'd say to consider the i7 or i9 if you can afford it, especially since Intel 10th gen are with lowered prices (to make way for 11th gen and fight AMD Ryzen). It's unknown when and how it'll be with the Vulkan engine update for DCS later on, but it may be the case that it'll push more cores than you can throw at it (again, unknown). The 10th gen i7 10700K/KF (8 cores/16 threads) is at a really good price, almost too good to pass. And although the i9 10850K/KF (10 cores/20 threads) is more expensive and runs hot (water cooling on this one is recommended), it's a good bang for the buck too. The K and KF means same unlocked chip (overclockable), only difference is that the K has integrated graphics, the KF does not and that's why it's slightly cheaper. Notice that these don't come with a CPU cooler, so you must have (a good) one separately for them. And although overclocking modern CPUs (be it Intel or AMD) no longer produces the sort of gains that we saw years ago, it's still nice to be able to push clocks higher with overclocking if desired. If it's for DCS, or a pure gaming machine, I'd say to go for the i7 10700KF (or the K version if you really need the IGPU) because of the good price for performance: Intel Core i7-10700KF 3.8 GHz LGA 1200 BX8070110700KF Desktop Processor - Newegg.com Intel Core i7-10700KF Desktop Processor 8 Cores up to 5.1 GHz Unlocked LGA1200 125W: Computers & Accessories at Amazon.com For the motherboard, since you prefer Asus TUF series, the Asus TUF GAMING Z590-PLUS is a nice combination at a good price: ASUS TUF GAMING Z590-PLUS LGA 1200 ATX Intel Motherboard - Newegg.com ASUS TUF Gaming Z590-Plus, LGA 1200 (Intel11th/10th Gen) ATX Motherboard: Computers & Accessories at Amazon.com For the memory, go for 32GB (2x 16GB) which is the current sweet spot for DCS. Or perhaps even 64GB (2x 32GB) if you can stretch to that. The Crucial Ballistix DDR4 3600 CL16 kits are excelent. Very performant, reliable and compatible (just ensure XMP is loaded in Bios and off you go) and at reasonable prices: Crucial Ballistix 32GB (2x 16GB) DDR4 3600 CL16 Desktop Memory - Newegg.com Crucial Ballistix 32GB (2x 16GB) 3600 MHz CL16 DDR4 DRAM Desktop Gaming Memory Kit BL2K16G36C16U4B (BLACK) at Amazon.com Edited July 26, 2021 by LucShep added links for parts CGTC - Caucasus retexture | A-10A cockpit retexture | Shadows Reduced Impact | DCS 2.5.6 - a lighter alternative Spoiler Win10 Pro x64 | Intel i7 12700K (OC@ 5.1/5.0p + 4.0e) | 64GB DDR4 (OC@ 3700 CL17 Crucial Ballistix) | RTX 3090 24GB EVGA FTW3 Ultra | 2TB NVMe (MP600 Pro XT) + 500GB SSD (WD Blue) + 3TB HDD (Toshiba P300) + 1TB HDD (WD Blue) | Corsair RMX 850W | Asus Z690 TUF+ D4 | TR PA120SE | Fractal Meshify-C | UAD Volt1 + Sennheiser HD-599SE | 7x USB 3.0 Hub | 50'' 4K Philips PUS7608 UHD TV + Head Tracking | HP Reverb G1 Pro (VR) | TM Warthog + Logitech X56
AngleOff66 Posted July 26, 2021 Posted July 26, 2021 Can you wait? Leaks about alder lake are coming out, and if true, they look to be faster than the current intels. Possibly 22% better than an AMD 5950 is nothing to sniff at IMHO. Skip to 9:36 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oY4pTQswMYE
BitMaster Posted July 26, 2021 Posted July 26, 2021 The trend towards 64GB in DCS is slowly arriving with Syria and the newer modules. If I was you and if you can afford it, go 64GB right away. It may be very tricky or impossible to add another 32GB a year later. I would personally prefer an AMD these days but the above mentioned HW is fine as well. We have choices meanwhile. BitMaster Posted July 28, 2021 Posted July 28, 2021 If it only was for the TPM, that would be easy to solve on the MAXIMUS VII FORMULA as you can add a 20 ( 19+1 blind ) pin TPM 2.0 Module as stated in the Manual ( RTFM ! ) The actual deal breaker is your CPU which is unsupported for Win11.
