CBStu Posted October 7, 2021 Posted October 7, 2021 I am flying a campaign that uses this combination frequently and it is driving me crazy. I find I need to be at least 10 miles away to have time to find the target and get the ATFLIR aimed and locked. And then move the little diamond to the MavF screen and uncage the Mav seeker and finally fire it. Sometimes it just won't fire and I fly over the target doing nothing. One part of this that I notice is the diamond is a light color and if the Mav screen is similar color I can't see if the diamond actually moved. Is there a way to change color of one or the other? I have a self created mission that I use to practice several types of bombs and missiles. Of course 8 Mavs worked just fine there yesterday. Looking for pointers so I don't have to cheat and use active pause so often. Is there a preferred altitude for this? A preferred air speed? Any other pointers?
Hulkbust44 Posted October 7, 2021 Posted October 7, 2021 If the MAVF won't fire and the physical conditions are satisfied (A/G MM, master arm on), then you don't have a contrast lock with the MAVF seeker. You will see MAV crossed out on the HUD. Try caging and uncaging again, if there is enough contrast for the target within the keyhole, the the weapon should achieve a lock if within about 8 NM.As for display color, you can just play with the brightness and contrast, no way to change the actually text color without mods.Mobius708
ShaunX Posted October 7, 2021 Posted October 7, 2021 I actually find the laser mavs far easier to deploy than MAVFs with the ATFLIR (and only a 30 second cooldown). They lock onto a beam almost immediately and consistantly when uncaged in range. Worth a try if you can rearm in the campaign ? I find the best way to find and lock a target is to fly on a parallel course 5-10 miles to the right of the area I know it's in (as I usually have the ATFLIR on the left cheek). This gives me more time to find it and if I go too far past and the FLIR gets masked then I just turn 90 degrees towards and I'm parallel again. That way you have plenty of time while maintaining 5-10 miles out. I'll then try to spot and use the JHMCS to roughly designate and then fine tune on the ATFLIR DDI with the TDC, before turning in and uncaging the mav. This method also works great to circle a moving convoy and pick them off one by one with laser mavs. For moving vehicles I do find ATFLIR struggles to engage auto track mode above about 12,000 feet, but that might just be me. No idea if this is the correct method but it works for me. CBStu Posted October 7, 2021 Author Posted October 7, 2021 Hulk I will keep that 8NM in mind. That is something I have not thought about. ShaunX I like that technique. When I don't get things done in time I usually fly straight till about 8 NM beyond the target and then do a 180. During the 180 I get about 10NM away. The 8NM and the 180 take quite a while to do so, if nothing else, your offset approach and 90deg turn will be a lot quicker. I agree locking onto movers is a real crapshoot. Getting the timing right is hard to do as the delay from scs push to the type of track changing is a bit of a guess.
fagulha Posted October 7, 2021 Posted October 7, 2021 I started to use the Lase Mavs too, and i never fly straight to the target after IP. As ShaunX do, i fly a right offset and after ATFLIR lock and lasing, cage the Mav (he locks the target right away) then i turn for my run. The only thing you must not forget is to keep lasing until the Mav hit the target. About carrier ops: "The younger pilots are still quite capable of holding their heads forward against the forces. Ah yes! happened me once or two, but now just look down to the panel and got no problems to be honest About carrier ops: "The younger pilots are still quite capable of holding their heads forward against the forces. In this clip I dropped 2 GBU24s on moving tanks (35kts) in one pass. The laser still kept going after the second impact.
