I'm wondering if there's anyone out there having lots of success using Voice Attack for PvP — if so, can you give any hints/tips how you get it to work most effectively?

  • NOT using Voice Attack I noticed Growling Sidewinder saying he's having lots of success link hosting AWACS then using the Jester Menu > STT Lock > Choose Specific Target — however using Voice Attack we can't do that (unless I'm mistaken)
  • I've only tried PvP a couple of times using Voice Attack, and tend to just say "Radar Mode TWS" (to go TWS Auto, not even sure if I need to do this), then wait for Jester to find targets on the radar/assign numbers, then say "Track single Target 1 (or whatever number) — to get lock.
  • However I notice he loses lock a lot after I fire a Phoenix — seems to switch radar modes or something, so I end up often having to fire off a couple of missiles
  • Also, what command do I use to to try and make sure it's an enemy and not a friendly? I've been using the map which feels like cheating and I'm imagining isn't an option on all servers?
  • Why doesn't AIRIO have a command 'track single bandit ahead' — instead it only has bogey/friendly options, and bogeys CAN be friendlies, unless I'm mistaken?

So yeah — any advice for all the commands/techniques you use to do well in PvP using VoiceAttack / AIRIO much appreciated.

Thanks,

Kingfish

I've used VA for a while in the 14 in PvP.  I use VA for nav ('Navigate steerpoint two') and radios ('AWACS select', 'connect ground power', 'ready preconatct' etc), but anything time critical gets mapped to the HOTAS (TWS/RWS, range scale, etc).

I think it's because Jester (in the wheel) only has 2 options for locking afaik: friendly and enemy, and they decided to use the phrase bogey for the latter.

Friendlies should not be Bogeys for long assuming IFF is working and employed correctly. Also I think on a PvP server it's fairly safe to assume that every Bogey is hostile as there are usually no neutrals, ROE is weapons free and IFF always works (if interrogation is done correctly).

Bogey is the incorrect term and it should be changed at some point.  You can, however, in the meantime record your own replacement term for the selection and have that work instead.

Thanks for the answers. Follow-on question, so in PvP yesterday, AWACS says there's a bandit straight in front of me, 2000ft higher @ 25 miles range. Jester is picking up nothing on the radar — I'm not quite sure what radar mode's he's using to not picking up a target 2000ft higher at 25 miles straight in front.  So I try saying 'Radar Mode TWS'  to go to TWS Auto in case he's in a weird mode. I'm still not picking up a bandit directly in front of me. Surprise surprise they lock me up and shoot off a missile at me. Still nothing on my radar.

In reality if an AWACS says there's a bandit straight ahead of you at 25 miles, a RIO would be doing everything possible in life to pick them up — so what am I doing wrong? What do I need to say to him? #frustrating

I use VA on daily basis for PvP and I can’t think of flying without it!
There is a Jester command saying lock on enemy target you may bind to voice command.

Jester doesn't really move the antenna around, you'll notice without some pointers he'll just leave the antenna pointed straight ahead. Once a target gets into 25 mile range you really need to start tilting the antenna up in order to move them back inside the cone, the closer the target the narrower your min and max altitude band will be.

If you let someone get that close without having them tracked then your options are a) turn tail b) use PAL c) point the nose up in order to move your cone manually or d) start fiddling in the Jester menu.

This won't work - antenna is stabilised horizontally.

Thanks for the advice all — after getting killed yet again due to Jester making strange radar decisions, I bought the F-16. At least now if I die, it's my fault. I'll come back to the F-14 when I can find a RIO... 🙂
