I'm having a problem on the TWS/Data link tutorial mission. First you have to use TWS mode to make a couple of enemies system targets and shoot them down — that's fine. Then you're instructed to go to a group of 4 enemies, tell your wingmen to attack and then use TWS to attack whoever they're not targeting. However I can't seem to get it to work — I set TWS radar mode as before, but if I press TMS right when the enemy are on my radar, nothing happens. TMS forward, nothing. If I position the cursor on the radar over them and try TWS right or up, nothing. Nothing seems to work — I even then as an experiment go to RWS mode, but I can't even get a lock on the enemies using that (putting the cursor over them and hitting TMS up). Am I doing something wrong? Weirdly I have succeeded in this mission once, where it just worked as it should — but I can't seem to replicate that consistently. There's either a bug or something vital missing from the tutorial (or something I've not understood??) I've tried all manner of workarounds, such as coming out of A/A mode, going to dogfight mode and then back to missile — selecting missiles/deselecting, to sort of reset — but nothing works.

This sounds like your antenna elevation is not properly set, if you don't see white bricks along with your dataling contacts on your FCR page, your radar didn't pick them up, so it can't lock them.

Key mapping for that:

ANT ELEV knob CCW - antenna elevation down

ANT ELEV knob CW - antenna elevation up

I can confirm that antenna elevation fixes the original problem, thanks. There is a couple of new quirks, like when I engage the 2nd group of bandits at the same as time as my wingmen using TWS, I seem to lock the first open target using TMS right, but then pressing TMS right again doesn’t move lock to other targets, just stays locked on original bandit. Something else I’m doing wrong? (During first engagement without wingmen, TMS right moves lock between targets fine).

Might be cause of the difference in bandit altitude so your antenna only picks up one of them and doesn9t see others, or they are notching your radar so it doesn't see them.

This is great and comprehensive video on how radars work, its long but its worth the time:

TMS right only steps to the next system track.

TWS displayed objects include:

  • contacts
  • tank tracks
  • system tracks
  • Link 16 datalink tracks

Tank and system tracks are almost impossible to tell apart. It helps to experiment with them with the Link 16 disabled (MIDS LVT off). And L16 tracks which your radar cannot see will never be stepped to. The difference is the hollow and solid fills on the symbols for uncorrelated (just DL) and correlated (DL and radar) tracks respectively.

I can also confirm that it's the Ant Elevation "bug."

Here's what I tried.

After I shot down the two bandits, it instructed me to go after the 4 new bandits... and lo 'n 'behold... the Ant Elevation without me doing anything to it other than following the instructions and changed mode etc., went completely berserk. Both low and high alt. next to the cursor went negative red. So, I just moved the Ant Elevation knob slightly, and it returned to blue and reads normal. Then TMS right worked as it should be, repeatedly.
