Hi Folks.

I noticed today when I loaded up that it took almost eight minutes from pressing "Run as administrator" to "Fly".

DCS is on a traditional hard drive.  If I put an SSD in my computer and load DCS into that will it make the load time and general access time faster?

If so, would an external drive be as good as an internal?

Just looking for ways to improve ,my computer until I can save for the Alien I have my eye on.

TIA.

Lee

Hi mate, ssd is a must in my opinion. It will definitely speed loading by a mile. But as far far as I know it has to be internal because of sata connection to mobo(which provides all the speed and consistency).

It will definitely make a huge deference in load time and performance on a  2.5 SSD. Not sure about an external drive. Got your eyes on the Alienware R13 ? LoL!

Interestingly you mentioned external drive. I sometimes would play with having another version of DCS (and Windows) in an external M2 SSD, and hook-up with USB 3.1/3.2's 10 or 20Gbps ports. Load time is almost as fast as internal SSD, but the connection is not very stable, and the drive would disconnect itself for no apparent reason sometimes (could be due to the cheapo M2 SSD USB adaptor). If 5Gbps USB 3.0 ports are what you have, the improvement wouldn't be as much, but theoretically it should be similar to internal 6Gbps SATAIII, and still much faster than HDD.

Similar experience here experiencing external ssd's. Get an internal 2.5" ssd, like a Samsung or crucial. Should knock that 8 minute down to 2-3.

If you want an Alien system, fair enough. Better value for money is available though.

You're probably very right. I should look around.

Yes. By a LOT. You should basolutely consider an ssd a requirement for DCS. You don't need a NVMe though, you won't see much difference in load times (speaking from experience), just a SATA SSD. Depending on how many modules you've got and if you buy multiple maps, I'd suggest a dedicated 1TB drive for DCS. My 500gb one is very nearly full

Lee1, I dont know where you are in the world. Plus, if your not confident in sourcing parts and putting your own system together, thats cool man. In the UK we have "Scan UK" they build 3XS systems and they are very good value for money. Personally I think that with Alienware your paying for the label, its no guarantee in quality of the parts or  the build. IE, the fans and cooler chose and thermal paste cable management etc etc.

I've changed parts in a few pre built systems for friends. A Scan 3XS system was one of the few I opened and it looked like the builder actually put some thought into it.

I agree, not sure how much is alienware value for money. A lot of times you just pay for the name unfortunately. Regarding scan, absolutely agree, got a psu couple of weeks ago, next day free delivery, can't complain.

Thanks Bossco, I'm in the UK I'll give Scan 3xs a look.

HI Lee1,

OK mate if your in the UK then please forget Alienware. Get in touch with Scan and have them build you a system. Overclockers UK were also very good, the only reason I say "were" is the fact that I have not seen a system built by them in over 10 years.

Ive built my own computers since the late 90's, I sometimes swap out parts or do small repairs through word of mouth as a favour for friends etc. Ive seen a few pre built systems in that time. The only ones I have seen that I would buy myself are from Scan and Overclockers.

Based on my experience a few years back when I was buying a gaming laptop, Alienware is one of the worst value for money providers on the market.

Building your own is so much fun and you can ensure it's done right. I recommend at least viewing a PC build video to see if it's something you think you can do.

The amount of prebuilt reviews I've seen, the good prebuilts seem to be very hard to come across.

Absolutely NO on the external drive. I use them for storing porn, hey I am single, and they are slow as a mf transferring files.
