DCS AI, I'm afraid. See all, know all.

A mountain will hide you. But anything smaller, you're taking a risk. And definitely not a tree.

We just have to hope this is all going to be part of ED's big AI rework which should, hopefully, get it to act in more human ways with human limitations.

Well that's not quite true as I understand...  The trouble with Heli's is they create absolutely MASSIVE radar signatures...  Especially the shark.

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying the SIM is perfect :)...  But yeah tree lines certainly won't hide you.  They just aren't tall enough and I'm not 100% sure the radar doesn't work through trees.  Buildings and terrain though...  Should mask you as long as they're tall enough to provide 100% complete cover and then some.  As I said...  heli's are EXTREMELY noisy to a radar.

Also consider any sort of AWACS etc that may have had you...  Also...  Even if the Mig couldn't see you directly IN your cover...  The AI isn't exactly dumb.  It's not like Metal Gear Solid where you just hide in a box for 10 seconds and they forget you were there :).  They will remember where you were going when they or someone saw you and go take a look :).

This.  You can hide behind mountains even.  They always know where you are.

I'm 99% certain that's not true 3WA...

I know there's evidence where something like a shilka will appear to track you after you've ducked behind cover...  but as a human...  I would also continue to track an enemy in that situation based on "hey they'll likely come out over there at about this time..." but that doesn't mean a shilka always tracks the player at all times and/or knows exactly where they are.

MAYBE that's true with ground units??  But I've used terrain masking to hide from enemy fighters (In fighters and in the shark) many times.  It's easier the closer you are.

I wonder, would it be considered a war crime to use civilian buildings between you and incoming missiles as shields...

No..... no its all fair game in war.

They are doing the firing.
